📍200 GREAT PLACES: Olympia Fields Country Club (Olympia Fields, IL) Olympia Fields Country Club was founded in 1915 by a group of investors headed by prominent Chicago businessman Charles Beach, who found a suitable site alongside the Illinois Central Railroad line, some 25 miles south of the city. Legendary University of Chicago football coach Amos Alonzo Stagg was appointed as the first president of the Country Club, which eventually purchased 20 farms spread over a 674-acre topographically diverse parcel. Construction of the immense clubhouse by George Nimmons was completed in 1925, becoming the largest private country club in America. The distinctive half-timbered, English-Tudor design features an eighty-foot-high, four-faced clock tower that has become the club’s trademark. By 1925, the club boasted four golf courses with plans for a fifth course. Today, Olympia Fields is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and remains a bright star in the firmament of American golf, with enormous dining facilities, historic greens, and private clubrooms for members and guests. 📍 illinoisgreatplaces.com 📷 www.ofcc.info | Olympia Fields Country Club 📐 1925 | George Nimmons
