The U.S. Department of Energy’s Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC) office is leading the way in strengthening and securing manufacturing and energy supply chains essential to modernizing America’s energy infrastructure and supporting a clean and equitable energy transition. We prioritize promoting innovation across U.S. manufacturing and energy supply chains to drive the creation of new technological advancements and create new workforce opportunities. MESC focuses on supporting and advancing the nation's manufacturing capabilities and energy supply chains. We’re helping address supply chain vulnerabilities and targeting identified areas of opportunities for investment through the Biden Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding, and the Defense Production Act (DPA). MESC supports $20 billion in programs that further these goals.

Yesterday, Office of Infrastructure, U.S. Department of Energy's Under Secretary Crane joined leadership from Cummins and the Mayor of Columbus, Indiana, to announce $150 million – in combined public and private investment – for the company's Columbus Engine Plant. Part of a $1.7 billion, eight-state investment in the future of American auto manufacturing, Cummins will convert their Columbus facility to manufacture zero-emissions components and electric powertrain systems. The Under Secretary underscored that this funding, made possible by President Biden’s Investing in America agenda and administered by DOE Manufacturing & Energy Supply Chains Office (MESC), is supporting American communities and the union workers who have driven the auto industry for generations – including the Diesel Workers Union and Office Committee Union at Cummins. 📢 Today we’re #deploying $14 Million committed to increase consumer 🔋 battery ♻#recycling and create innovative and practical approaches to increase the #reuse and recycling of #batteries. The selected projects will provide over 1,000 local collection points for spent batteries from consumer products, allowing consumers easy and free access to turn in old batteries and battery-containing devices and address e-waste across the country. This type of #e-waste, which includes rechargeable batteries #cellphones, laptops, vacuums, and #smartwatches, is recycled at rates of less than 20%, and contains #criticalminerals and materials such as nickel, lithium, and graphite critical for the battery sector.
