  • Five unique thrush species once graced the islands, two of them endemic to Kauaʻi, but only Puaiohi and the Hawaiʻi ʻŌmaʻo remain today. Kauaʻi’s thrushes (the other is the extinct Kāmaʻo) are known for their shy and inconspicuous nature, slender bills and round bodies.   • ʻŌhelo: Three Species of Vaccinium (left) Still-wet kapa dyed with ʻōhelo will dry to a livelier shade. Its dye is always a pink surprise. (top right) Fat globes of ‘ōhelo papa (Vaccinium reticulatum) sprawling in the open on ʻāina pōhaku and cinder lands. Itʻs the one most gathered for pies and jam – but be mindful that our increasing populations of nēnē also enjoy dining on the fruit. (middle right) Look carefully and you’ll find (Vaccinium dentatum) mixed in with mosses and small ferns on mossy tree trunks in rain forest. It also favors bogs, and other wet sites ma uka.   • The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) is considering advocacy options regarding possible drainage impacts to the Kāneiʻolouma Heiau and complex from the Kauanoe o Kōloa Project, a 280-unit luxury condominium subdivision, in Kōloa, Kauaʻi, due to concerns that the Kauaʻi Planning Commission approved the project’s master drainage plan (MDP) in December 2023 without fully considering recommendations from the project’s Ka Paʻakai Analysis and possible impacts to the heiau.   • Ke Kahua o Kāneiʻolouma (Kāneiʻolouma Complex) is a 13-acre cultural site at Poʻipū, Kōloa, Kauaʻi. Dating back to the mid-1400s, the complex includes remnants of dwelling sites, fishponds, taro patches, above-ground aqueducts, irrigation ditches, as well as shrines, altars and platforms for idols. The largest section of the complex features an arena situated in a natural amphitheater where makahiki events were held. Continuing our huakaʻi through the paeʻāina and moving over to Maui with the founders of @nohoanafarm 🌿 Nohoʻana Farm grows kalo and a variety of canoe crops on their kuleana lands in Waikapū, Maui to enrich their community and support the lāhui in times of need. From restoring water to Nā Wai ʻEha to EAducating the next generation on traditional practices and perpetuating the language🌀 Hōkūao and Alana embody what we look for when building our cohort: a dedication to aloha ‘āina and perpetuation of ʻike kūpuna.
