Announcing the retirement of Dr. Ivor Pritchard, Senior Advisor to the Director of the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP)
It is with both admiration and sadness that we announce the retirement of Dr. Ivor Pritchard, Senior Advisor to the Director, former Acting Director, and a cornerstone of our team at the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP).
Over the course of his distinguished career spanning over 40 years, Dr. Pritchard has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of human research protections, leaving an indelible mark on our organization and the broader research community.
Dr. Pritchard's journey with OHRP began in 2004, following his departure from the Institute for Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education. In joining OHRP, Dr. Pritchard brought with him a wealth of experience and expertise in research ethics and federal policy, moral and civic education research and practice, and education policy.
As Senior Advisor to the Director of OHRP, Dr. Pritchard spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at protecting the rights, welfare, and well-being of subjects involved in research conducted or supported by HHS, as well as for upholding the highest ethical standards for our field. This has included support in the effort to revise the Common Rule, as well as issue guidance and clarifications, provide direction in the development of educational products and programs, and maintain regulatory compliance.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Pritchard's genuine humility, compassion, humor, and musical talent have endeared him to all who have had the privilege of working alongside him, as well as to the regulated community at large. Whether in providing mentorship to junior staff, engaging with stakeholders and the public, or advocating for the ethical principles that underpin our work, he has consistently embodied the highest ideals of public service.
As Dr. Pritchard embarks on this well-deserved journey into retirement, we extend our deepest gratitude for his immeasurable contributions to OHRP and the field of human research protections. While we will miss his presence dearly, we take solace in knowing that his legacy will endure as a beacon of integrity, professionalism, and ethical leadership.
