Our Impactful Partnership with ABALOBI We believe delicious seafood shouldn't come at the expense of our oceans or the communities who depend on them. That's why we're proud to share the story of our impactful partnership with ABALOBI, a South African organisation dedicated to empowering small-scale fishing communities. ➡️ A Sustainable Choice with a Powerful Impact Our journey began with a simple desire: to introduce Cape Bream, a delicious and green-listed fish species, to our menu. However, sourcing it responsibly proved challenging. Enter ABALOBI, whose focus on responsible fishing practices and fisher empowerment perfectly aligned with our values. ➡️From Precarious to Prosperous: Transforming Lives at Sea For many small-scale fishers in South Africa, economic uncertainty and unsustainable practices were a constant threat.  ABALOBI addressed these issues by: ➡️Providing Financial Stability: Ocean Basket's commitment to a fair price for sustainably caught Cape Bream has provided much-needed income stability for these communities. In 2024 alone, we purchased over 9,450 kg of Cape Bream ➡️Boosting Local Economies:  Our partnership significantly impacts ABALOBI's marketplace turnover. So far in 2024, Ocean Basket has been responsible for over 40% of ABALOBI's total sales volumes demonstrating our commitment to supporting local businesses and communities. ➡️Empowering Fishers:  For many fishers, Ocean Basket represents a significant portion of their income. So far in 2024, 58.23% of a Cape Bream fisher's income comes from supplying us, providing a crucial financial safety net and fostering entrepreneurial spirit. ➡️Building a Brighter Future for People and the Planet The impact extends far beyond financial gain. This partnership strengthens food security in these communities by allowing fishers to put food on their tables for their families.  Furthermore, by making traditional fishing practices economically viable, the initiative ensures these communities don't abandon their heritage due to economic pressures. ➡️Looking Ahead: A Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Seafood We're committed to growing this impactful partnership. Our goal is to source 80% of our Cape Bream from ABALOBI-partnered communities, further strengthening their economic stability.  Additionally, discussions are underway to expand the partnership to include other sustainable seafood options. Our collaboration with ABALOBI serves as a powerful example of how businesses can work hand-in-hand with communities to ensure not only environmental sustainability but also social and economic well-being.  By choosing Ocean Basket, you're not just choosing delicious seafood, you're choosing to support a future where people and the planet can thrive together. #SustainableSeafood #EmpoweringCommunities #OceanBasket #ABALOBI

When Ocean Basket introduced whole seabream to our menu two summers ago, we sold out in six weeks. This unexpected success led to a game-changing collaboration with ABALOBI – a local organisation empowering small-scale fishing communities through fair pricing, technology and sustainable practices.  Since early 2023, we've purchased almost 28 tons of Cape Bream from these communities, paying R1.5-million directly to the fishers. This fair and consistent compensation ensures a stable income, enabling fishers to support their families and maintain their traditional, low-impact fishing methods. Our partnership has enhanced food security and preserved cultural heritage. By securing a reliable demand for Cape Bream—a sustainable, green-listed species—we're fostering a brighter, more resilient future for traditional fishers. We believe in the power of collective effort. Together with ABALOBI, we're making a real, lasting impact on the lives of many, showcasing how responsible business practices can drive positive change. #WorldOceanDay

This #WorldOceanDay, we're celebrating a partnership that we are so passionate about. Two summers ago, we introduced whole Cape Bream to our menu, a delicious and sustainable choice. But finding a reliable, local and sustainable source proved tricky. Enter ABALOBI, a South African organisation championing small-scale fishing communities. Together, we're making a difference: 🐟Empowering Fishers: We pay a fair price for their catch, ensuring adequate compensation and a stable income. So far, this has directly impacted 14 skippers, 103 crew members, and 20 cleaning/quality control personnel! 🐟Boosting Food Security: Fair pay allows fishers to feed their families and strengthens the community's food supply. 🐟Protecting the Ocean: We support sustainable fishing practices, ensuring the future of these communities and marine life. The impact is real: We've purchased almost 28 tonnes of Cape Bream, directly contributing nearly R1.5 million to these communities. We're working towards sourcing 80% of our Cape Bream from ABALOBI, with plans to expand to other species! This is just the beginning! We're committed to building a brighter future for fishers, the ocean, and our communities. #WorldOceansDay #SustainableSeafood #OceanBasket #ABALOBI #EmpoweringCommunities

The next generation Ocean Basket has just opened its doors to guests and family in Paphos, Cyprus. An iconic site at the harbour. This is our 3rd brand evolution in 15 years since opening in Cyprus in 2008. Thank you to the team, most of whom have been with us for over 10 years. So appreciative to the thousands of tourists and residents of Cyprus for welcoming us to your gorgeous island. We love being there. I can't wait to visit our new home at the end of June. Hope to see you all there. OPA! #oceanbasketcyprus #cyprusrestaurants #newrestaurantopening #seafoodlovers #restaurantsuccess

This week is mental health awareness week in the UK. The whole person comes to work. The days of 'leaving your problems at home' are over - thank goodness. What a stupid thing to say. How do you take your feelings out of your mind and heart and leave them somewhere? Where? in a drawer? in the fridge? And what about the problems that cause anxiety at work? Where should we leave those? Growing up we are taught how to count, speak nicely, remember dates in history, obey instructions, behave in a way that society accepts. We apologise when we cry - AND do NOT apologise when we laugh. How strange is that? We are people working with people. The whole person. People are not resources. We are people. Only harm results from suppressing feelings. There is great benefit from learning to identify triggers and feelings, and then learning a few simple skills to help us navigate our next steps. To shift from react to respond, from outburst to pause. "Anchored in Wellness" is a week long programme our mental health coach TT Consulting Tracey Turner and Ocean Basket L&D Exec Jessica Pallister have put together. Thank you🐟😘

It's the little things 2 weeks ago I received a beautiful message from Yaseen Akleker on LinkedIn. He went to enjoy a meal at Ocean Basket Canal Walk and met Tendai Mkumbira - one of our hosts. He told me that he visits this restaurant purely because of Tendai. Yaseen asked Tendai to sit at his table and take the order. This has become a ritual now. "His humility and positive spirit is truly inspirational". Last week our regional leader Celeste Langenberg surprised Tendai with a thank you gift and certificate of so much appreciation. Imagine - from one LinkedIn story to being acknowledged. A huge hug to Yaseen Akleker for taking the time to share his story with me on LinkedIn. So generous of you. These are the moments that fill my heart and give me the energy to drive through the not such fun CEO stuff. 😄😄😄🐟🐟🐟🫡🫡🦐🦐🦐🦐.
