Reflections on our Joint Journey We organised a session this week, the first we have run which was specifically dedicated to updating senior stakeholders of OA Switchboard. The theme of this session was Reflections on our Joint Journey. During the event we built on our collaborative efforts by reflecting on our original intentions, highlighted the success of the initiative and key milestones, shared planned next steps, and assessed current challenges as we keep moving towards realising our mission: Streamlining the communication between funders, institutions and publishers regarding Open Access publication-level arrangements and striving for the research ecosystem to work better for researchers, funders, institutions and publishers, and their business partners, such that Open Access is supported as the predominant model of publication. Thank you to all participants, founding partners and ambassadors.

About us
The OA Switchboard initiative is a not-for-profit collaboration between funders, institutions and publishers to provide essential infrastructure, standards and back office services to achieve a breakthrough in the transformation of the market such that Open Access is supported as the predominant model of publication. The OA Switchboard is a central information exchange hub, connecting parties and systems, streamlining communication and the neutral exchange of OA related publication-level information, and ensuring a financial settlement can be done. As independent intermediary, the OA Switchboard provides direct, indirect and community benefits: Simplicity - Transparency - Collaboration - Inter-operability - Efficiency - Cost-effectivess. The eco-system to work better for everyone: learn, adjust and progress. For funders who want to implement OA policies on a publication-level and demonstrate impact of their research funding. For research institutions who want publication-level delivery on their OA strategies and monitor/manage their OA funds/budgets. For academic publishers who want to reduce administrative complexity around publication-level fulfilment of policies and/or agreements and provide easy reporting.

Trust | Collaboration | Efficiency That's why participants join OA Switchboard - central metadata exchange hub. Publishers join OA Switchboard for different reasons, depending on their own identity and strategies. More specifically: I. SERVICES: As an intermediary, the OA Switchboard simplifies the sharing of information between publishers, institutions and funders. --> Any publisher with contractual obligations to report on #OA output and 'deals’ has the opportunity to fulfil these better by providing their reports in the #standardised OA Switchboard (JSON) format. For all publishers, pro-actively pushing information on relevant publications to research funders and institutions/consortia improves #visibility and #discoverability of content, regardless of business model (e.g. #S2O, #diamond, #APC-based, #TA's). In general, it provides a better service to customers and partners. By #reporting via OA Switchboard, a publisher ensures that they have their own (improved) metadata available in a standardised format also. This supports their own (business) purposes and OA strategies. II. OPEN INFRASTRUCTURE: We bring the community together to agree and adopt #standardised exchange of metadata about OA publications throughout the publication journey, and to build and operate the supporting shared #open_infrastructure. --> Open infrastructure provides a foundation on which other services may be built. It eases integration into the ecosystem and downstream systems. As a neutral not-for-profit, community-led intermediary the OA Switchboard reduces the transactional cost for stakeholders, and it provides a safe place for publication metadata. The new National Information Standards Organization (#NISO) Working Group on "Recommended Practice" is building on the work the OA Switchboard community (and others) have done the last 5 years. See animation "A safe space for publication medatadata": https://lnkd.in/e_5KkvQ4 III. COMMUNITY & MISSION: All founding partners and participants in OA Switchboard are convinced of the importance of supporting open infrastructure and being part of a community of like-minded spirits to share experiences and best practices with. Together, they support and contribute to the mission of the OA Switchboard foundation. Meet with us at #SSP2024 Society for Scholarly Publishing to explore how OA Switchboard can support your business goals and how you can get connected in a matter of weeks: https://lnkd.in/egC9F_Ty

News: De Gruyter now connected to OA Switchboard As part of their ongoing commitment to an open future, De Gruyter is pleased to announce the new partnership with the OA Switchboard... As of May 1st, 2024, automatic and real-time notifications of open access articles published in all De Gruyter Brill journals will be sent to affiliated stakeholders active within the OA Switchboard.... This service is vital for the transparent reporting around De Gruyter’s growing portfolio of open access journals of all publishing models, and additionally to inform libraries about their affiliated authors benefiting from open access publication within De Gruyter’s Subscribe to Open (#S2O) journals, the main model aiding in the publisher's large scale transformation to open access. “We are delighted that we can now offer our library customers and consortia a clear and smooth solution for managing and integrating article output metadata. Our cooperation with the OA Switchboard enables scalable and automated reporting, which is invaluable for the success of our open access transformation plan,” said Ben Ashcroft, Chief Commercial Officer, De Gruyter Brill. Who doesn't care about advancing research integrity, reporting, assessment and the discovery of ideas? Watch our video animation that tells the positive story of how #metadata are crucial for all of this! It is an initiative from Aries Systems MoreBrains Cooperative ORCID Royal Society of Chemistry Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association and Stichting OA Switchboard The video illustrates how this could look across the lifespan of one research grant. It shows that all the components are there. It is about making them work together properly and everyone has a part to play. For our global research system to function, we need connections between the building blocks of research. These connections can be realised by metadata, that captures how people, organisations and things interact. There is a challenge in making, preserving and sharing the connections, and re-using the associated metadata. We've just released a video animation on 'Connections between the building blocks of research and their associated metadata.' It tells the positive story of how it can be done. It illustrates how this could look across the lifespan of one research grant. It shows that all the components are there. It is about making them work together properly and everyone has a part to play. OA Data Lab at Electronic Resources and Libraries (ER&L) Join us at ER&L (Austin (TX), 3-6 March 2024) to see the OA research coming out of your institution. We will be presenting at ER&L and hosting an OA Data Lab where you will have trial access so you can play around with your institution's data in order to: - create meaningful analyses out of the data provided - import this data into your own systems to have correct and complete records ( (e.g. ConsortiaManager, OTTO HARRASSOWITZ GMBH & CO. KG #FOKUS, #Oable)) - enhance and develop the data provided by publishers to support further internal workflows, decision-making and reporting (internal and external) - manage/analyse deals and paid-for OA - make self-storage by institutions more efficient and trustworthy RSVP here for lab times: https://lnkd.in/e-vGJAP2
