Congratulations to O’Melveny partner Tony Wang on his recent induction as the 2024-2025 president of the Orange County Asian American Bar Association (OCAABA). Tony was sworn in at OCAABA’s 30th Annual Installation Dinner along with his fellow board members. Meet Noah Mengisteab, a Summer Associate and Coleman Fellow in our Dallas office. Noah is currently studying at NYU School of Law. As an Eritrean-American, Noah has always balanced two distinct cultures: “I have never been just American or just Eritrean,” he said. When he was an undergraduate, Noah joined Rice University’s Black Male Leadership Initiative, where he organized the club’s mentorship program at Title I elementary schools. Because of his experiences navigating higher education and careers without much mentorship and guidance, Noah has become a mentor to his community. “The real work of inclusion must occur through daily interactions with my peers,” he said. This also explains his dedication to coaching younger students on speech and debate. Noah’s professional goals as an attorney and personal goals as a champion for inclusivity in the legal space blended in this opportunity with O’Melveny. He felt an inclusive environment both within and outside the firm, which affirmed his decision to join the firm as a Coleman Fellow. As he begins his legal career at O’Melveny, Noah plans to “encourage collaboration and communication while embracing differences” to diversify the legal space. Noah is an avid skier, but his first love is basketball—and LeBron James! However, he is eager to adopt Dallas’s Mavericks and Cowboys as his new “hometown” teams. #OMMSummer24 #OMMRise #ColemanFellows #OMelvenyDTX

Some members from our New York Community Involvement Committee recently spent the afternoon at a stewardship event at Tompkins Square Park in partnership with The Lower East Side Ecology Center. O'Melveny's Eric Rothenberg, John Rousakis, Ellie P., Heidi Bliss, and Desirae Tongco helped lay mulch on garden beds, watered flowers, and worked on deadheading old growth from flowers to promote new growth. 🌼 🌱 #cOMMunityNY #OMMInTheCOMMunity #OMelvenyNY

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation recently published draft guidelines for the review of horizontal mergers, aiming to enhance transparency and predictability in the merger review process. These guidelines, which align with international practices, include provisions on market definition, assessment of market shares, concentration levels, and other factors, such as national economic development and data privacy concerns. O'Melveny's Philip Monaghan, Lining Shan, and Weixuan (Vivian) Wang have more on the guidlines. https://loom.ly/VyE40Dc #OMMAntitrust

We are delighted to introduce Helena Li, a 2L Coleman Fellow based in our Washington, DC office, who is currently studying at Stanford Law School. When she was contemplating attending law school, Helena read My Beloved World, the memoir of US Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and was moved by the value and importance of having lawyers from diverse backgrounds. As a result, Helena has realized that being an attorney “means using my knowledge and experience to create impact for others.” As she embarks on her legal career, Helena credits Sotomayor’s words with keeping her grounded, in being unapologetically herself, and empowering her to be a leader. “I have learned that I can influence the legal industry just as it influences me,” she said. Despite feeling out of place at times in a world where she was not exposed to female attorneys—let alone Asian-American ones—Helena does her best make her peers feel welcome and strives to make connections with Stanford students. As the co-president of Stanford Law Association, Helena advocated for policies to make the law school experience accessible and approachable for all students. Helena appreciates the friendliness of her O’Melveny colleagues, who offer a variety of perspectives on her questions—from professional guidance through antitrust law exposure and experience to practical advice on navigating DC’s coffee shop scene. In her free time, Helena is an active hiker and runner. She also likes to cook and scour the town for live music venues. #OMMSummer24 #OMMRise #ColemanFellows #OMelvenyDC

The Biden Administration recently released the Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles to promote the responsible growth of voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) by ensuring economic opportunities and market integrity. This initiative follows recent California legislation on carbon offset disclosures and aligns with international efforts to enhance VCM integrity, reflecting a trend toward greater accountability and verification in carbon offsets. Some of our lawyers and business professionals from our London office celebrated London Legal Walk’s 20th Anniversary by joining over 1000 organizations for a 10km walk around the city. The walkers helped raise close to £1 million—a brilliant new record—for London Legal Support Trust, an independent charity that supports frontline free legal advice providers.
