About us
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is North America's largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people in the 5,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The MTA comprises six agencies: MTA New York City Transit, MTA Bus Company, MTA Long Island Rail Road, MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, and MTA Construction & Development. The MTA network has the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined. It provides around 2.6 billion trips each year, accounting for about one-third of the nation’s mass transit users and two-thirds of its commuter rail passengers. MTA Bridges and Tunnels, which recorded a record 329 million crossings in 2019, carries more vehicles than any other bridge and tunnel authority in the nation. This summer, the Whitney is getting out of the galleries and hopping on the subway in a partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. 🚇 Next stop: New York Transit Museum! Housed in an authentic subway station in Downtown Brooklyn, the Transit Museum is accessible by over 20 (!) bus and subway lines. Join us at the Transit Museum this Saturday, July 27, for a special artmaking activity inspired by the 2024 #WhitneyBiennial. We'll be creating colorful signs and sticker tile images, drawing inspiration from artist Jane Dickson, whose painting Save Time (2020) you may remember from the 2022 Biennial. A large-scale vinyl installation of Save Time is also currently installed on the facade of a former retail space at the West Fourth Street MTA station. Get all the details below. See you there!

Our teams at Bridges and Tunnels and Construction and Development are performing overnight flood door tests in the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel and Queens Midtown Tunnel to prepare for potential storms. Each door weighs 20+ tons and is nearly two-feet thick! In the event of a coastal storm, these doors prevent water from infiltrating tunnels and causing extensive damage. See the full test schedule and sign up for alerts from Bridges and Tunnels: https://lnkd.in/eGk7b49W
