As extreme weather events become more frequent, communities worldwide must adapt swiftly. Our partners at the University of Oxford are at the forefront of this effort, pioneering advanced extreme weather forecasting and early warning systems in East Africa. In collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), this Oxford-led initiative will integrate AI technologies to enhance community safety in the region. The Exchange aims to confront urgent climate impacts and develop innovative, scalable, and sustainable solutions.
About us
The New York Climate Exchange (“The Exchange”) is a first-of-its-kind collaborative model for accelerating climate change solutions for New York City and beyond. Powered by its strong partnerships and future home on Governors Island, The Exchange will use education, research, an innovation hub, job training, and public programs to prepare communities to respond to climate challenges. The Exchange is based on a simple idea: collaboration works. The Exchange’s partner network includes climate experts, researchers, educators, business leaders, and community organizers who are working together to tackle the effects of climate change. Expected to open in 2028, The Exchange’s home on Governors Island will be a beacon for sustainable and resilient urban environments around the world, using renewable energy and zero-waste technologies to generate more energy than it consumes. The Exchange also aspires to be New York City’s first large-scale mass timber development and first Living Building Challenges certification. Together, The Exchange’s partner network, physical campus, and extensive offerings will explore and develop climate solutions focused on justice and inclusion; the relationship between energy, water, and food systems; and sustainable urban environments. Opportunities to explore and get involved with The Exchange will be available before construction starts.

We're looking forward to spending Sunday, July 14 on #GovernorsIsland, sharing our progress and vision for a global #climate hub. You can find our tent (and take a tour at 11:45am, 12:45pm, 1:45pm or 2:45 pm) near the archway of Liggett Hall. NOTE WE WILL NO LONGER BE OFFERING TOURS ON SATURDAY, JULY 13 DUE TO PREDICTED INCLEMENT WEATHER. Stop by for a chat if you are going to be attending City of Water Day with the Waterfront Alliance, the New York City Poetry Festival (thanks to The Poetry Society of New York), or Earth Matter NY's Cyanotype workshop! Ferries operated by the Trust for Governors Island run from Manhattan and Brooklyn (schedule at https://lnkd.in/g8f2B8QX). We can't wait to meet you there!

Summer is here, and with it, the urban heat island effect is in full swing. Our partner WE ACT for Environmental Justice recently took to the streets of NYC during a record heat wave to showcase the stark difference in surface temperatures on tree-lined streets versus those without tree cover. Their findings were striking: areas without tree cover saw sidewalk temperatures soar to over 120 degrees, while shaded sidewalks remained just below 90 degrees. As the climate crisis intensifies, innovative streetscape design will be crucial in helping communities in New York and cities worldwide manage extreme heat. Our partners at the American Geophysical Union recently published a study revealing that half of the world's lakes are now less resilient due to climate change. This increased vulnerability is primarily driven by accelerated glacial melt, a direct consequence of global warming. Notably, lakes in the northeastern regions have been among the hardest hit. This study serves as a stark reminder of the tangible impacts of climate change. These issues won't resolve themselves—we must take decisive action to address the climate crisis now. Do you have original research that explores the impact of Earth and space science on society? Consider submitting an abstract for the American Geophysical Union’s “What’s Next for Science” meeting. As partners of the #NewYorkClimateExchange, AGU hosts an annual meeting attended by over 25,000 participants from 100+ countries. This event provides a platform for sharing groundbreaking scientific research, fostering connections, and promoting awareness and collaboration to address climate change through evidence-based solutions. AGU24 will take place this December in Washington, D.C. Submit your abstract by July 31 and learn more about the submission process here: https://lnkd.in/eTVUhgCN #ClimateChange #EarthScience #SpaceScience #ScientificResearch #Collaboration #AGU24 #NYClimateExchange

A compelling analysis from our partner, University of Oxford’s Transport Studies Unit, led by Professor @Christian Brand, reveals that the shift towards larger, heavier electric vehicles (EVs) may undermine their environmental and economic benefits. While electric SUVs are significantly more energy-efficient than their traditional counterparts, they still require substantial resources to manufacture and have higher energy consumption. This increases their environmental footprint, potentially offsetting the gains from electrification. As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day with the traditional fireworks display, it's important to consider the environmental impact of these festivities. Fireworks, though exciting, contribute significantly to air pollution. Research indicates that during the #FourthofJuly, fireworks release 42% more pollutants into the atmosphere than on an average day. These pollutants exacerbate the #climatecrisis, highlighting the need for more sustainable celebration practices. Learn more about the environmental effects of fireworks and explore eco-friendly alternatives to enjoy the holiday responsibly: https://lnkd.in/eypxdj6G #ClimateAction #Sustainability #IndependenceDay #EnvironmentalImpact #NYClimateExchange

Our partners at Brookhaven Lab embarked on a 2,500-mile cross-country journey to find out how air quality and temperature vary across neighborhoods. Using a fleet of mobile sensors, they are collecting data that will quantify air quality and temperature equity. This important initiative is part of the Department of Energy-funded Southwest Urban Corridor IFL project. We’re proud to see important work being done by our partners across the country and globe. https://lnkd.in/eBdmCmmZ
