At NST, we never stop exploring! NSTers have access to an exploration fund designed to sponsor activities that allow team members to try new activities and challenge themselves in new ways. Kirsten Skala recently attended a seaweed cyanotype workshop led by San Diego photographer and marine scientist, Oriana Poindexter. They used different types of seaweed to create a print using an alternative photographic process called cyanotype, which uses UV rays (the sun!) to expose and water to develop the print. Kirsten shared, “I enjoyed learning about the different types of seaweeds that live off the coast of San Diego and using my hands and the organic materials and process to create something beautiful. At NST, and through our client work in agriculture, we’re advocating for the preservation and resilience of California commodities, including citrus and other fruits and vegetables. I think having a connection to nature, specifically living plants, whether it’s plants that live underwater or on land, reaffirms the importance of taking care of our environment and gives us a larger purpose for the work we do every day.” Oriana currently has two exhibits: Ebb + Flow at UC San Diego and Hold Fast at Birch Aquarium.
