We’re proud to partner with Mountwest Community and Technical College and West Virginia University at Parkersburg to open our Service Desk Academy. This initiative enables students to gain real-world work experience while earning their degrees in Information Technology. No matter what cyber protection you have in place (and it should be extensive) - everyone from the CEO down still needs to stay vigilant when it comes to hackers. A US security company called KnowBe4 has discovered that they accidentally hired a North Korean hacker posing as a software engineer. The Mac that was assigned to the new employee immediately started to load up malware. Luckily the company detected this and remotely contained the Mac before the hacker could compromise KnowBe4’s internal systems. In this case, existing security software on the Mac notified the IT team, but there are still tons of ways hackers can infiltrate your company – and it’s often through unwitting employees. The cyber security landscape is dynamic and ever-changing with new threats emerging daily, and hackers are now starting to take advantage of advanced tools like gen AI to launch even more sophisticated attacks. Every year, I start with the intention of working myself out of my job. I work with selected people to take on some of my current responsibilities, helping them grow and seeing who is ready to step up. It can be daunting. Teaching someone else to handle a major responsibility of your own might make you insecure about your future and what you’re going to do next to add real value. However, as a leader, I feel it’s my responsibility to develop others and ensure that nothing I do is irreplaceable. When I help someone else master a task that I do well, it frees me to tackle new challenges. Furthermore, I am often pleasantly surprised seeing others execute better than I had ever been able to do so myself. A leader who believes they are the smartest and hoards capabilities out of job security fears stunts the growth of others, and ultimately the company. “Don’t go! Take me with you!” As of late, I’ve been travelling nearly every week for work which causes conflict in other important areas of life for me. It’s a choice, and I’ve chosen – and am motivated by – the desire to do my best for my family. For me, work is more than just money, it’s about the positive impact I want to leave in the world. I feel a responsibility to build and leave a legacy not just for my family, but for others in our broader community as well. This entails putting in a lot of hours, a lot of travel. That’s just the way it is. I am working hard to stop letting the guilt of not being with my family impact my performance and presence at work AND not letting my work commitments impact my performance and presence at home. I certainly do not have this all figured out and it’s a big area of reflection on my journey. I imagine others experience the same conflict. How do you balance all of life’s competing priorities?
