Why is this tour group wearing gloves? So they can see the art with their hands! We recently welcomed guests from the Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches for an accessible touch tour. Our Learning and Community Engagement team worked with our Curatorial team to create an experience for our visitors with low vision. During this tour, visitors were able to interact with sculptures and engage in thoughtful discussions on materials, media, and subjects. Each participant wore special gloves to allow them to feel the art, under conditions that ensured the safety of both the artworks and the participants. We're always seeking ways to make the Norton more accessible and are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can experience the wonder of art. Contact us to book a tour that caters to whatever needs you may have. A day at the zoo... wait, we mean the Norton! 🐻 This print, on view now in "The Paper Trail: 500 Years of Prints from the Jonathan 'Jack' Frost Collection" shows a scene of the Berlin Zoo in 1851. Though this bear pit would not be at home in a modern zoo, we can still appreciate Adolf Friedrich Menzel's lifelike figures. The artist, known for his Realist style, was applauded by his contemporaries for his works which showed a truth to nature and technical accomplishment. You can see this work alongside other prints made throughout history during your next visit to the Norton. This exhibition is on view now until August 11, 2024! 🐻: Adolf Friedrich Menzel (German, 1815 – 1905), "Der Bärenzwinger im zoologischen Garten (The Bear Pit in the Zoological Garden)," 1851, from the series "Versuche auf Stein mit Pinsel und Schabeisen (Essays on Stone with Brush and Scraper)," Lithograph on chine collé, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 in. (24.8 x 19.7 cm), Promised Gift of the Collection of Jonathan “Jack” Frost

It's been 100 years of Surrealism, and we're celebrating in style with René Magritte! Surrealism as an art movement was born in 1924, with French poet André Breton's "Surrealist Manifesto" that scorned the popularity of realism in art of the day. Seeking to release the unconscious mind and its creative potential, Surrealist art often used irrational juxtaposition of images, dreamlike imagery, and the element of surprise. There are few Surrealists more iconic than Magritte, whose work "Les Tambours de la Mort" is currently on view in Picower Gallery on the first floor. His practice often featured the repeated motif of a figure clad in a bowler hat, as seen here. Commemorate 100 years of this movement and its continued influence on art and check out this work during your next visit.
