The Economic Cost of Violence. We are grateful the two acts of violence experienced in the BID area this past weekend did not result in loss of life and we continue to pray and work towards community healing. Violent crimes are costly and impose concrete economic costs on the victims who survive, the families of those who lose their lives, the loss of earnings, and their physical and emotional tolls. Violent crimes also impose large costs on communities through lower property values, higher insurance premiums, and reduced investment in high-crime areas. In addition, violent crimes impose significant costs on taxpayers, who bear the financial burden of maintaining the police personnel and operations, courts, jails, and prisons directed toward these crimes and their perpetrators. In 2019, Total Justice Expenditures in Omaha were $160,231,000 (https://bjs.ojp.gov/jeet). A 2022 estimate found that the U.S. economy lost approximately $53.77 billion due to gun violence. The incidence of violent crimes in North Omaha and the North 24th Street Business Improvement District has fallen during the last year but as a community, we must remain vigilant in deterring crime. To that end, we are grateful for the work of many toward restorative justice, crime prevention, and safety in our community. One way that the BID Association champions the effort is through its Streetscape Masterplan which will increase lighting on the corridor, activate vacant lots into vibrant community spaces, and support new and established businesses on the corridor; all contributing to crime reduction and increased social and economic prosperity in the community. Let’s do better. #north24thstreetbid #north24thstreet #businessimprovementdistrict #gunviolenceawareness #gunviolenceprevention

Fireworks Public Service Announcement Why is proper cleanup important? Fireworks contain a variety of poisonous materials including lead, heavy metals, sulfur-coal compounds, and chemicals like perchlorates. With proper cleanup practices, residents can prevent fireworks waste from entering storm drains on the street. Many people do not realize that the storm drain system flows to local rivers and streams without being filtered or treated first. When fireworks debris enters a storm drain, pollutants are washed into local waterways and cause harm to aquatic ecosystems. After the show, it’s generally advised to take these four, simple steps: 1. BE SAFE & WAIT 20 - After lighting a firework, wait 20 minutes before picking it up to ensure any flame is out, and use caution. 2. SOAK FIREWORKS - Submerge all used or misfired fireworks in a bucket of water for 15 minutes or until saturated. 3. SWEEP & BAG - Sweep up all dust and debris, and seal it in a plastic bag along with the wet fireworks waste. Place the sealed bag in the trash, away from buildings. 4. FLUSH THE WATER - After removing the wet fireworks, flush the water from the bucket used for soaking down a toilet. Do not dump the water in the street or grass, and do not hose down the area, as this will wash debris into storm drains. #environment #north24thstreetbid #north24thstreet #KOB #cleanup #4thofJuly

Fireworks Safety and Cleanup: Fireworks contain a variety of toxic chemicals, including heavy metals, sulfur-coal compounds, and other poisonous materials. These properties create colors and effects in fireworks but can leave behind harmful pollution that impacts people, wildlife, and natural resources. Safe cleanup practices will help prevent fireworks waste from entering storm drains on the street, which flow to rivers and streams without being filtered first. Cleaning up helps protect our local waterways and our urban ecosystem – the neighborhoods and parks where we live and play. Thanks for doing your part to keep our community healthy! #north24thstreet #north24thstreetbid #KOB #fireworks #4thofJuly #community #communitysafety
