For pediatric patients like Andres, sickle cell disease is far more than a diagnosis. It’s 54 hospitalizations in the span of a year and a half. It’s a constant fear of sickle cell crises. It’s the theft of a typical childhood. However, when a blood stem cell match was found for Andres, hope for a new reality came to fruition. A life-changing transplant in 2022 offered Andres the newfound ability to enjoy childhood without the restraints of sickle cell disease.
