Breathing new life into abandoned buildings and downtowns! That’s what the DOS Downtown Revitalization Initiative is doing in downtowns throughout the State, including the Harper’s Corner project in Rochester—which will transform four abandoned, blighted historic buildings into a vibrant mixed-use downtown anchor. DOS Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer Nicole Jean Christian spoke at the commemorative renaming of the project, noting that Harper’s Corner was named after Martha Matilda Harper, a trailblazing female entrepreneur with roots in Rochester. Congratulations to the City, developer Home Leasing and all the community members and leaders who are making this project possible!

“Public art like this can be a powerful force for social equity, diversity and inclusion, in addition to its tremendous contribution to Haverstraw’s downtown vibrancy.” - NYS Secretary of State Hon. Walter Mosley on the unveiling of the Harriet Tubman sculpture and African-American heritage mural in Haverstraw, NY as part of this month’s Juneteenth celebration. Both projects were funded by the State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Congratulations to the Village of Haverstraw and the Haverstraw African American Connection for using their DRI award for such a meaningful project!

It’s World Oceans Month! And while some are enjoying the ocean swimming, boating or fishing, DOS staff are busy measuring and monitoring horseshoe crabs at the Long Island South Shore Estuary Reserve. Why? To make sure this remarkable 345-million-year-old species survives another half-billion years. Shout out to Sally Kellogg from DOS for braving the heat to help preserve this species and the entire South Shore Estuary ecosystem! 🦀 🌊 Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gKZUwvG9
