Earlier this year, I was appointed to serve as a member of the New York City Bar Association's Civic Education Task Force. In that role, I have been working with a team of attorneys to prepare the NYC Bar's inaugural Constitution Day event scheduled to take place in person at the NYC Bar on September 17, 2024, from 6 pm to 8 pm. CLE credit is available for attendees. So far, we have lined up an amazing pair of speakers, including Alex Abdo, Litigation Director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, and Ester Murdukhayeva, Deputy Solicitor General in the Office of the New York State Attorney General. Both panelists submitted amicus briefs in the pair of NetChoice cases the Supreme Court heard during this last term, and Alex also submitted an amicus brief in Murthy v. Missouri, another case the Supreme Court decided during the most recent term. The event is co-sponsored by the Civil Rights Committee, Federal Courts Committee, Litigation Committee, Communications & Media Law Committee, Digital Technologies Task Force, Entertainment Law Committee, and Senior Lawyers Committee. On August 2, The American Bar Association hosted its inaugural “Democracy Summit" at its Annual Meeting in Chicago, where it honored "Unsung Heroes of Democracy." The City Bar’s Rule of Law Task Force was recognized for its "work, programming, and relationships with numerous institutions in metropolitan New York" that "have been a beacon of hope and action for lawyers and the American public to support democracy and build the rule of law." Task Force Chair Marcy Kahn (bottom, left) accepted the award from ABA President Mary Smith on behalf of the Task Force. Muhammad Faridi, President of the New York City Bar Association, is joined by Boaz Morag, a Counsel at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton to discuss three private international law treaties that deal with the cross-border recognition and enforcement of court judgments and mediated settlement agreements. We investigate the purpose and impact of these treaties on current practice in this country and on U.S. litigants who seek to enforce U.S. courts judgments abroad, the status of the treaties, and the detailed recommendations provided in the City Bar report. The episode provides an in-depth exploration of the potential benefits of these conventions for litigants seeking to have their judgments and settlements enforced internationally as well as the intricacies involved in implementing these treaties in the United States.
