New City Parks brings parks to neighborhoods that need them.
About us
Mission of New City Parks is to work closely with small cities and their underserved communities to create parks where they are most needed, bringing greater health and happiness through play, exercise, and contact with nature, and building environmental and community resilience. New City Parks (NCP) was launched in the fall of 2019 to address park access inequities. Under the leadership of Rose Harvey, former Commissioner of NY State Parks and previously National Director of Urban Programs for the Trust for Public Land, NCP works with communities to realize their visions of safe, appealing, and well-designed parks. NCP currently has fourteen projects underway in five cities in the Northeast. We have raised significant private funding to provide community outreach and pre-development, engineering, and design services to make these parks ready for transformation. This private investment is now leveraging over $34 million dollars in primarily public capital funding for the construction of our park projects. Four parks have been fully renovated and are being stewarded and programmed in collaboration with our community partners. #urbanparks #neighborhoodparks #publicspace #greenschoolyards #climateresiliency

Evenings on zoom, library basements, and downtown churches. 📚 That’s where you can find New City Parks these days, because that's where the community is. A hallmark of our model is speaking with community members and learning what they need from their parks. 🌳 In these meetings concept plans are presented to the community and local residents are encouraged to ask questions about the park plans and offer input on what would serve the community best. Most recently we found ourselves in Mount Vernon and in the City of Peekskill, New York. 😊 #communitymeetings #townhallmeetings #proccess #newcityparks

Last week, did you get outside for a firework show, concert, games, or BBQ? Our parks, playgrounds, and neighborhood open spaces are precious places where communities can come together. These are the places that define and celebrate cultural identity, create a sense of belonging, and encourage Americans to gather, connect and better understand each other — our civic infrastructure. A new article from the Percent for Place coalition, in which @newcityparks is a proud member, highlights how federal legislators prioritized investments in gathering spaces like these in communities across the nation in this year’s federal budget. https://lnkd.in/enwBMvkY NCP knows firsthand how critical this legislative support is. In FY2023, NCP’s project, Westside Park in @City of Paterson, NJ, received Community Project Funding from Rep. Bill Pascrell to rehabilitate The Johnny Briggs Baseball Field. This funding is integral to improving the existing poor conditions to create a functional, safe, and welcoming recreational facility for local children. That’s something to celebrate! #Percent4Place #CivicInfrastructure #publicspace #federal #funding

Last week, community members gathered in City of Poughkeepsie’s Malcolm X Park to celebrate Juneteenth at an event organized by Mental Health America Dutchess, with remarks from State Senator Robert Rolison, NCP Board Member. Malcolm X, NCP’s fourth completed project to date which opened just one year ago, is fulfilling the promise of community parks – providing space for people to come together… to celebrate, to commemorate. “Access is important, but I believe making people feel included and welcome is equally important. If parks do this well, people will be more willing to use them.” Dan Trudeau in Next City | The Conversation US on the importance of considering parks and public space providing moments of social interaction, particularly among people of diverse backgrounds. https://lnkd.in/eC4WTefM #parks #welcome #publicspace #CivicCommonsUS #civicinfrastructure
