Uniting the Gifts of People, Place, & Purpose.

About us

The Nelson County Schools is part of an ongoing story tied inextricably to the people, place and community of the fourth-oldest county in Kentucky. The district comprises over 4,000 students in 12 schools, from pre-kindergarten at the Early Learning Center for 3-year-olds to the seniors at its two high schools, Nelson County High and Thomas Nelson High. About 350 certified teachers and 300 support staff support students, families and the community. The Nelson County Schools believes that every community member has valuable gifts to share with the world to live a happy, healthy and empowered life. Technological, social and economic change has transformed every aspect for our community over the past century, and education has both played a role in that advancement as well as been affected by those forces. In the early 1900s the county had nearly 80 schools throughout its communities that served as a pillar of local civic life. As access to transportation increased, many of these smaller schools started to consolidate into larger community schools in the 1930s and ’40s. Those same forces that affected education in the 20th century continue to influence our schools in the 21st, and Nelson County Schools is a forward-looking district proactively examining and adapting to what this century will demand of future leaders and the education needed to prepare them. The district seeks to honor its history by uniting students to people, place and purpose while at the same time preparing them for future success. In 2021, the district engaged the community in months of conversations about the future of our schools. A vision of a Community Campus model emerged from those discussions. Uniting middle and high school students onto two campuses will enable the district to ensure equity and access to opportunity for every student in the county, no matter where their families choose to live.

Nelson County Schools has solidified a partnership with CHI and Flaget Memorial Hospital, heralding a new era of opportunities for students pursuing careers in the Health Science Pathway. The collaborative initiative between NCS and the local hospital aims to provide aspiring healthcare professionals with access to real-world experiences and networking prospects. Under this partnership, students enrolled in certification programs at the Health Science Pathway at the Nelson County Area Technology Center (ATC) will have the privilege of conducting their classes within the hospital premises. The facility will serve as an extension of their learning environment, offering the chance to use authentic hospital equipment and interact closely with medical professionals. One of the most significant aspects of this collaboration is the age restriction for employment at Flaget and the CHI Medical Group. The hospital will employ students who have obtained certifications starting as young as 17 years old. This presents an advantage for junior students, as they can now gain practical experience and earn income through the Work Based Learning program, benefiting both the students and the community they serve. Julie Craig, the Health Science Leader, expressed her enthusiasm for this collaboration, stating, "This partnership with Flaget and CHI facilities is a game-changer for our students. It opens up new possibilities for their careers and fosters a strong connection with our community's healthcare services. Now, our students can apply their health care certifications in real-world settings and contribute to the well-being of our community." https://lnkd.in/eRMP2Jny

ATC introduces heavy equipment pathway Last week, the Nelson County Area Technology Center unveiled its newest career pathway, heavy equipment, to the community and industry professionals. Program instructor Scott Thompson highlights his future for the early stages of the pathway. Nelson County Schools has only been in session for less than two weeks, but the ATC has already begun to offer new opportunities for the school year with the introduction of the new heavy equipment pathway. Thompson will helm this new pathway designed to give students hands-on experience with heavy machinery such as skid steers and excavators. “This is just a starting point,” Thompson said. “The seeds have been planted and we really truly feel like … a jumping off point. … Starting out with these two pieces (of equipment) we’re planning on getting a backhoe, the laser level and the transit equipment so the students can do all that. … When they get to the job site their first day of work and they get handed that shovel, they’re familiar with all that equipment and they’re not going to be caught off guard by industry terms that they’ve never heard of.” The inception of the heavy equipment pathway began after asking what students and industry professionals asked for the future of the ATC. College and Career Lead Kyle Boblitt credits Misty Roller with beginning the conversation around heavy equipment and diesel mechanics pathways for the ATC. Roller, ATC’s Community Relations Lead, said she was told in the next five years jobs that will continue to grow in demand will be equipment operators, truck drivers and CTE educators. https://lnkd.in/gAbFMxGy
