In my latest for The War Zone I explain that reading the side numbers of airplanes on aircraft carrier decks has been a vital human job for nearly a century. But the Navy may automate the task using an algorithm developed for its NOCTRNAL project. @TheWarZone Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) https://lnkd.in/eFw_RtQd

#SouthernMaryland keep your eyes on the skies! ✈️Hundreds of college and high school students from across the globe have descended on the Patuxent River area to compete their self-built unmanned systems at the 22nd annual RoboNation Student Unmanned Aerial Systems Competition at the St. Mary's County Airport in partnership with #NAWCAD. The competition launched today with system safety checks by our test pilots and engineers from our Air Test and Evaluation Squadron TWO FOUR (UX-24) Ghost Wolves 🐺! 📦This year’s obstacle course challenged students to build an unmanned system that focuses on logistics transportation, requiring systems to travel to a recipient, identify drop locations, and safely deliver a package autonomously—all while avoiding other #UAS' — a critically important mission for #NavalAviation. 💸Student teams who are the top achievers in technical design, flight readiness, and mission demonstration will take home up to $20,000 in cash prizes. 🍀Systems start flying tomorrow. Good luck to our student competitors!

Bravo Zulu to two outstanding Blackjacks! Mr. Pat Collins and Mr. Gerik Landis were both recently awarded the Civilian Service Achievement Medal (CSAM) for their immense contributions and efforts while working with the H-60 Test Team. Specifically, they were recognized for their incredible work and success while tasked with the test and development of the Digital Magnetic Anomaly Detection (DMAD) advanced mission subsystem for the MH-60R Seahawk multi-mission helicopter. Congrats to both Pat and Gerik on a job well done! Very well deserved! #HX21 #MH60R #FlightTestEngineer #AviationExcellence
