  • NATO held a #NATOPublicForum alongside the launch of the 2024 #NATOSummit, with prominent speakers from across the Alliance discussing the international security themes of the Summit. The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, Commander, US European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Cavoli, Prime Ministers, journalists and other leading global thinkers joined together to discuss #Ukraine, deterrence and defense, partnerships, and other aspects of international security and stability. The Public Forum is an event that aims to promote a better public understanding of #NATO's policies, goals, and decisions through dialogue and engagement with a unique and diverse group of stakeholders. NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) was present throughout the day with a delegation led by Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General Lavigne, and featuring Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General Chris Badia, Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral Guy Robinson CB OBE, and Deputy Chief of Staff for Capability Development, Vice Admiral Jeff Hughes. One of the key themes of the discussions was the launch of the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine. NATO will take over the coordination and provision of most international security assistance, with a command led by a three-star general, with hundreds of personnel working at a NATO headquarters in Germany and at logistical nodes in the eastern part of the Alliance. This will enhance Ukraine's self-defence. It will not make NATO a party to the conflict. Since Russia's full-scale invasion, Allies have provided around 4 billion euros in military aid each year. It's expected Allies will agree to sustain this level within the next year and to share the burden fairly, and to review it at our Summit in 2025, not least to ensure that Allied support is in line with Ukraine's needs. Another key theme was the possibility of Allied leaders agreeing to work more closely with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including at a new NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Centre in Poland and deepening cooperation on #innovation and defence industrial production. #WeAreNATO

  • 🇺🇸 The US State Secretary Blinken at the #NATOPublicForum on 🇺🇦Ukraine: “What is so important is delivering practical results.” The Public Forum seeks to enhance public insight into NATO’s policies and goals set for the Washington #NATOSummit. It is all about dynamic dialogues and engagements involving a diverse array of stakeholders: from Heads of State and Government, Ministers, and international security experts to influential voices, academics, journalists, and young leaders. The event features panel discussions, debates, and interactive sessions covering a wide spectrum of topics central to NATO's agenda. https://lnkd.in/dVCyUHF4 #WeAreNATO

  • #ClimateChange poses challenges such as testing the resilience of military infrastructure and equipment, creating more severe operational conditions, and altering the strategic landscape. The importance of climate change! A crucial discussion on climate security took place today at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, a timely event ahead of the NATO #WashingtonSummit. As a crisis multiplier that exacerbates existing conflicts and creates new security risks, climate change is potentially the most consequential threat we face today. NATO's 2023 Strategic Foresight Analysis (#SFA) led by NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) underlines this assessment, adding that, in the long term, the interconnected challenges of climate breakdown and loss of biodiversity are the most likely existential challenge, which will prompt significant changes in the attitudes and behaviours of both state and non-state actors. The discussion on "Military Transformation in a Climate Changed World", thereby highlighted the urgent need for armed forces to adapt to the realities of climate change. Climate change has profound implications for our defence planning efforts. It demands innovative approaches, flexibility, and close collaboration with academia and industry to ensure our forces maintain their operational effectiveness and resilience. Only by working together, as NATO members and partners, we can ensure the continued credibility of our deterrence and defence posture in the face of this global challenge. On this occasion, I would like to extend my congratulations on the formal NATO accreditation of the NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence (CCAS CoE)!
