We are excited to share that Lee Leon will throw the first pitch for the Oakland Athletics' Native American Heritage Game! Lee has been a valued part of #TeamNAHC for over 24 years. Earlier this week, our Cultural Committee gathered to surprise Lee with a custom jersey and let him know he needed to start practicing his pitch. ⚾ Lee is one of the biggest A's fans we know, and he grew up going to games with his family. On May 21st, we gathered our partners and stakeholders to celebrate the groundbreaking of our newest building, which will expand our campus in Oakland’s Fruitvale Neighborhood. We were grateful to be joined by Mayor Sheng Thao, Councilmember Noel Gallo our key partner in this project — Satellite Affordable Housing Associates (SAHA) and our donors, including Sutter Health. We extend our deepest gratitude as well to our entire development team—from the architects and contractors Nibbi Brothers General Contractors to the engineers and public artists. Together, we are building a future rooted in strength, resiliency, and excellence. Thank you to all who attended and supported this important step forward! NAHC stands with California Consortium for Urban Indian Health and California Rural Indian Health Board in strong opposition to Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom's proposed elimination of the State Indian Health Program (IHP). The Governor's May Budget Revision proposes eliminating the $23 million allocated to IHP. The loss of this funding will have a devastating impact, reducing the health programs available to our communities. With Native Americans having the highest rates of diabetes, suicide and opioid overdose—and the lowest life expectancy—this funding is critical to providing thousands of Natives with access to essential health services. Please stand with us in urging Governor Newsom and your state legislators to protect the State Indian Health Program and ensure the health and well-being of Native Americans in California. #TeamNAHC was in DC this week at the National Council of Urban Indian Health (Official) conference! Our Chief Cultural Officer, Anthony, and Breanna, from NAHC's research team, provided a powerful presentation on our Medicine Bundle project that focuses on traditional medicine and how culture is prevention. While there, we also met with congressmembers to advocate for important healthcare initiatives for urban Natives and had the opportunity to meet the former Navajo Nation President, Johnathan Nez. At the conference, NCUIH awarded the Urban Indian Legacy Award to our former CEO, Martin Waukazoo (Lakota) for his enduring contributions to Native healthcare. We were honored to accept it on his behalf. Congratulations, Marty! Thank you NCUIH for hosting this important gathering each year. 🪶
