“The most effective way to do it is to do it.”- Amelia Earhart For Vice Admiral Vivien Crea's journey this rings especially true! From being one of the first women commissioned in the Coast Guard Reserves to becoming the first female Vice Commandant, she's carved a path for generations to follow. Imagine the strength it took to step into Naval Flight School when the doors first opened for women. Crea didn't just walk through – she flew through with flying colors, earning her wings and making history as the second female Coast Guard aviator. Who are the servicewomen in your life who embody this spirit? Share their stories below! #NVMM #Veterans #Military #Museum #WomenWarriorWednesday #leadership #coastguard #womenwholead #aviation

Join us for our next Meet the Author Night with Marty Skovlund, Jr., former Army Ranger and co-author of “Send Me: The True Story of a Mother at War.” It’s a newly released publication sharing the incredible life Shannon Kent, a Navy senior chief petty officer who was killed in a 2019 Manbij bombing in Syria. A Navy cryptologic technician, and one of the first women to serve as a special operator, Kent was fluent in seven languages and served multiple tours in Iraq, contributing to the capture of hundreds of enemy insurgents. Only a fraction of the 1.3 million active-duty service members in the U.S. military are selected to be “operators,” and Shannon Kent was among the best. This conversation will be moderated by Michael Jerome Plunkett, Executive Director of The Literature of War Foundation. Q&A and Book Signing to follow the discussion. Limited seats available! Less than two miles east of the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, at 1334 East Livingston Avenue in Columbus, Ohio, sits an unassuming wood framed house with a small historical marker that is easy to miss. It is the childhood home of a true American hero and Columbus native, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker. His story, one of hundreds told throughout the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, is inspirational and legendary. Captain Rickenbacker's illustrious military career stands as a testament to the power of determination and courage. Despite limited formal education, he demonstrated exceptional aptitude and unwavering resolve, persuading Army leadership to grant him the opportunity to train as one of the nation's first pursuit pilots. Transitioning from his successful career as a race car driver, Captain Rickenbacker channeled his innate bravery and competitive spirit into becoming one of the most accomplished fighter aces in military history. His unparalleled record of 26 confirmed enemy aircraft kills during World War I, often achieved while facing overwhelming odds, remained unbroken until the latter stages of World War II. In recognition of his exemplary service and valor, Captain Rickenbacker was awarded the highest military honors, including the Congressional Medal of Honor and an unprecedented eight Distinguished Service Crosses. His contributions were further acknowledged internationally, with France bestowing upon him the prestigious Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre. Rickenbacker's dual expertise as both a race car driver and fighter pilot exemplify a rare combination of skills and daring that few can hope to emulate. Captain Rickenbacker died on this date, 1973. #eddierickenbacker #ace #wwi #wordwari #columbusohio

After receiving his wings on December 1, 1941, Lt. Ronald P. Gift became the youngest squadron commander in the Pacific by 1944. During the Battle of the Philippine Sea, he was awarded the Navy Cross for leading his squadron in an evening strike against the Japanese fleet and sinking a carrier - a feat after which he found time for a little celebration. #getthecarriers #militaryhistory #pacifictheater #navy #wwii
