The National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) is the premier business organization advocating a rules-based world economy. Founded in 1914 by a group of American companies that supported an open world trading system, the NFTC and its affiliates now serve more than 100 member companies in the Washington DC Office.

How can we protect America’s vital national security interests, reach a common understanding of what it means to “de-risk” our relationship with China, and find a new normal for our economic ties that maximizes the advantages for American businesses and workers? The National Foreign Trade Council was privileged to lead a dynamic conversation through our Alliance for National Security and Competitiveness to wrestle with these and other tough questions. Congratulations to Jeannette Chu for leading a wide-ranging and clear-eyed conversation about the bilateral relationship with China as well as the importance of “running faster” through carefully crafted domestic policies and assertive U.S. global economic leadership to strengthen supply chains with our allies. How can the USG reduce supply chain snarls and increase secure and efficient port operations? The National Foreign Trade Council's John Pickel was phenomenal in elevating U.S. business priorities in testimony before a Senate Finance Subcommittee hearing on Examining Trade Enforcement and Entry of Merchandise at U.S. Ports. A few highlights: --- John emphasized the value of industry and government working together to achieve shared outcomes; the role of technology, including AI, to enhance efficiency and security at our ports; the need for closer coordination between the nearly 50 U.S. agencies tasked with trade enforcement; and the critical importance of differentiating the effective and streamlined use of meaningful data points to enhance security from "surplus data that makes the haystack larger." --- On forced labor, he noted that getting at the root causes through diplomatic engagement and trade negotiations is a far more sustainable approach than relying solely on border enforcement, which should be more of a backstop than a single point of failure. --- He suggested Congress and the Administration should find ways to expand partnerships with our trading partners to overcome vulnerabilities and build up more systemic strengths in the global trading system, flagging the Medical Supply Chain Resilience Act as a perfect example of how to engage with our most trusted allies to make sure we have access to medical supplies. NFTC is grateful to the Finance Subcommittee on International Trade, Customs, and Global Competitiveness' Chair Tom Carper and Ranking Member John Cornyn for their leadership on these issues, and the thoughtful engagement of Senators Catherine Cortez Masto, Charles Grassley, and Ben Cardin.
