It was wonderful to attend the National Brain Tumor Society's Glioblastoma Awareness Day Reception last night! It was great to hear from the bipartisan lawmakers who introduced the BRAIN Act (https://lnkd.in/g7w5Je5M), leaders from the National Cancer Institute, and fellow advocates. As a brain cancer survivor, it was truly impactful to see the NBTS community's work in action and hear from others who have been affected by these terrible diseases. I'm excited to see future progress in improving patient outcomes and survivorship experiences! #GBMDay

Tonight’s National Brain Tumor Society reception for Glioblastoma (GBM) Awareness Day on Capitol Hill brought together lawmakers from the Senate and House, the National Cancer Institute Director, legislative staff, leaders in the field of cancer research and advocates & members of the NBTS community. Thanks to CEO David Arons, Board Chair Edjah Nduom and the NBTS team for a great event. GBM is the most complex, treatment-resistant, and deadliest type of brain cancer. Tonight’s reception was an opportunity to honor impacted patients & families and raise awareness for the need for “better chances”, more effective treatments and a cure. Special thanks to Senators John Barrasso (R- WY) and Lindsey Graham (R- SC), and Representatives Roger Williams (R- TX 25) & Susan Wild (D-PA 7) for their leadership in Congress on this important issue. Thanks also to the team at National Brain Tumor Society for your amazing work! #GBMAwarenessDay

We are pleased to share that today, Representative Susan Wild, Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, Representative Lori Trahan, Representative John Joyce, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Senator John Barrasso, Senator Jack Reed, and Senator Mike Rounds introduced the Bolstering Research And Innovation Now (BRAIN) Act in Congress. This landmark piece of legislation –– a historic first for the brain tumor community –– advances our mission to defeat brain tumors, once and for all, by strengthening and better funding research efforts, accelerating the quest for cures, fostering collaboration, promoting critical awareness efforts, and innovating the way health care is delivered for patients with brain tumors and survivors. Please join us in thanking the co-sponsors of this bill and in asking your own representatives to help make this urgently needed law a reality. It was an honor to raise awareness for #GBMDay with National Brain Tumor Society in the form of a blog post, quick video, and attendance at a multidisciplinary research meeting!! Be sure you’re following NBTS and click through the link in the original post to read my thoughts on the important distinction: illness vs disease! #glioblastology #braincancer #braintumorawareness #philosophy #patientadvocacy #glioblastoma
NBTS board member Adam Hayden has been living with –– and writing about –– brain cancer since 2016. As we raise awareness around #GBMDay, he invites us all to explore the crucial distinction between disease and illness in the brain tumor experience: "To best understand the brain tumor and brain cancer patient experience, we must differentiate between these two intimately related yet distinct features of living with a life-altering condition: disease and illness."
