* Beginning today, July 30, #Ohio is expanding its sales tax holiday from three to ten days and covering a large variety of products under $500. Last year, it only covered clothing under $75 and school supplies under $20.
About 17 other states have tax holidays according to the Federation of Tax Administrators, but the length and number of items covered means that Ohio's will have dramatic fiscal consequences: Ohio is predicted to run to $740 million this year, compared to a little over $20 million in fiscal 2023."
Is this worthwhile? Many critics believe it is bad tax policy. As an article from Policy Matters Ohio, says, “Both the Tax Foundation, a conservative research group, and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a progressive think tank, have called sales tax holidays ineffective, poorly targeted and another drain on public resources . . . "
* The public sector workforce shortage is a pressing problem -- especially in hard to fill jobs -- but there's finally some genuinely good news to be found in a recent research report by MissionSquare Research Institute, in collaboration with the Public Sector HR Association (PSHRA) and the National Association of State Personnel Executives (NASPE).
The needle may finally be moving measurably on a number of those hard-to-fill job fronts. For 11 occupations including information technology, dispatch and policing, the share of government reporting them as hard to fill has declined by at least 10 percentage points since 2022.
* Lengthy delays in processing court cases -- a nationwide issue -- is a problem of fairness and justice to the accused, But a new report by Office of the New York City Comptroller Brad Lander takes note of the gigantic price tag that results from people languishing in jails.
According to the comptroller, “ Reducing case processing time in line with national best practices would reduce the city’s jail population – saving the city as much as $877 million each year . . .”
