Helping PNW cats and dogs thrive since 1988.

About us

Mud Bay is the nation’s largest independent, family and employee-owned natural pet food and supplies retailer, with 63+ stores across the Pacific Northwest. A pioneer of natural pet care, we pride ourselves on providing the highest-quality food, treats, toys and supplies on the market, with the friendliest, most knowledgeable staff around. Decades of strong relationships with some of the most respected pet food and supply companies in the industry mean pet owners get deeply vetted products at everyday low prices—making excellent pet nutrition affordable. In fact, our in-store team—affectionately known as Muddies—participate in a year of in-depth pet nutrition training. Together, we’re able to provide individualized, solutions-based suggestions for all our furry customers that pet parents can trust. We’ve grown since our humble beginnings in 1988—but neither our mission, nor our values, have changed. We’re still committed to contributing to the health of dogs and cats and the happiness of those who care for them. We’re still about empowering Muddies to create the best Mud Bay experience for the pet parent. And our Muddies are always proud to continuously improve, own and operate one of the best-loved retail stores in the Pacific Northwest.

The Mud Bay 2023 Animal Welfare Program Report is Here!: https://lnkd.in/gTu6PWna Mud Bay’s Animal Welfare Program (AWP) has grown over the last 30+ years. What started as a simple coupon inviting new pet parents into Mud Bay and giving a portion of the sales back to shelters, has grown into more than $1,000,000 annually, of food, supplies, and financial support. From Bellingham to Bend, Salem to Sammamish, all our AWP partners are dedicated, 501(c)3 animal welfare organizations actively caring for animals seeking their forever homes. Our decades of strong relationships with some of the most respected pet food and supply companies in the industry allow us to team up for emergency needs as well as everyday giving. These partnerships, coupled with our own matching and that of our generous customers, mean we can help support thousands of shelter animals in our communities, throughout the year. A huge thank you to all our partners, customers and Muddies who help make this happen and most importantly to the AWP organizations and volunteers working tirelessly on the front lines every day for the animals.

We just finished tallying the numbers! This holiday season, with the help of our incredible customers and manufacturing partners, the Mud Bay Giving Tree program raised donations totaling...drumroll please... 19,682 POUNDS of food (that’s nearly 10 tons!) and 26,621 supply items (litter, blankets, toys, beds, etc.) for shelter animals in the PNW. To all our customers and Muddies who made this possible, thank you! Your generosity, hard work, and empathy will make feeding and caring for 1000’s of pets waiting for their “furever” homes, that much more secure in the coming months. To all our Animal Welfare Program partners, thank YOU for all your tireless work caring for these animals and finding them homes. It takes a community and we’re grateful to be in all of yours. #giftingforgood #community #values

Back in November (how are we already in December??) we partnered with DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital on their annual blood bank toy drive. The blood bank provides over 700 life-saving transfusions for pets in the Portland/Vancouver metro area each year. Each time a dog or cat in our community donates to the blood bank, they get a toy to go home with. Through the generosity of our awesome customers and the Mud Bay match, we were able to collect more than 400 toys for these furry heroes! And, as any seasoned blood donor knows, giving blood is always followed up by a snack to get you back to your old self. So, with that in mind, we also threw in 200 lbs. of yummy treats for good measure. What a great way to head into the holidays!

Some heroes wear capes and others, like Zelda, wear collars. 🐶 🐈 💪 If you have a pet, and you’re in the Portland, OR area, you probably have DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital’ number on speed dial. But did you know one of the area’s most popular pet emergency centers is also one of the country’s largest blood banks for pet emergencies? The DoveLewis blood bank is 100% cat and dog volunteer-based and after each donation, the “donor” (in addition to lots of love and treats) gets to pick out a toy to take home! We are so proud to be supporting these life-saving heroes by sponsoring the annual DoveLewis Blood Bank Annual Toy Drive for volunteers like Zelda—pictured here and on her 10th drive. From now till October 23rd, Mud Bay will match every toy purchased for the Toy Drive in one of our participating Portland-area stores and bring them all to DoveLewis for our furry friends. Thank you Zelda, DoveLewis and all our community pets who are helping save lives! 🙏 ❤️ https://lnkd.in/g4hsRjWu

There's an important day coming up for pets and their communities this Saturday...The first-annual Neighborhood Pet Store Day! The day was started by the IndiePet Association and will be celebrated by nearly 8000 independent pet retailers across the U.S., including Mud Bay!   Independent pet retailers—just like bookstores and coffeehouses—are part of the fabric of our neighborhoods. They're places to gather, learn, and shop with your pets, knowing that every purchase you make is supporting local jobs and giving back, in the community. The expertise, time spent with customers, and information these retailers provide help thousands of pets across the country thrive. As a founding member of IndiePet, the national association of independent pet retailers, we are so excited to celebrate the first ever Neighborhood Pet Store Day this Saturday! #Givingback #Community #NeighborhoodPetStoreDay #Local #petretail

Nothing kicks off the week quite like doing and feeling good, and today we were able to do just that with a donation to one of our Animal Welfare partners, Seattle Veterinary Outreach. SVO does amazing and much-needed outreach work in the greater Seattle area for pets in underserved and low-income communities. Our awesome crew of Muddies at the Lake Forest store rolled up their sleeves, did a few stretches and got to work loading more than 1000 lbs. of pet food into SVO’s decommissioned ambulance (the outreach mobile!) to distribute to pets and their families. Thank you SVO for the work you do and providing an opportunity for us to give back to our Seattle #community !
