Did you know that more than half of pregnancy-related deaths happen in the post-partum period, up to one year after giving birth? Many would assume that the act of giving birth itself is the most dangerous and life-threatening aspect of the childbearing experience, but it isn't. The leading cause of death in pregnant women and new moms is mental health-related. The brain is arguably the most vital organ in our bodies, so why isn't mental health treated as importantly as a failing liver? It's imperative that we shift the narrative around postpartum care and support for parents by breaking existing taboos and integrating mental health screenings and support all along the pregnancy journey, from conception and beyond. A USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics study published by AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care in June found that mothers whose pregnacy is covered under a high-deductible commercial insurance plan and whose maternity care episode spans two coverage years pay an estimated $1,310 more than those with a maternity care episode in a single coverage year. Maternal and infant morbidity and mortality is a pressing public health crisis and should be treated as such ⚠️🏥 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for Disease Control and Prevention for Disease Control and Prevention released reports determining that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are PREVENTABLE. The JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association released a study last year showing that maternal deaths across the US more than doubled over the course of two decades, with Black mothers dying at rates 3 to 4x higher than white women. We’ve all come from mothers; we’ve all been born. Many of us are mothers or will be one day. Indeed, we’ve all loved someone who has or is getting ready to give birth. The act of labor itself is arguably one of the most traumatic events the human body can possibly undergo. So why is this endemic scarcely known, acknowledged, or discussed? What is being done to address this? Why are women dying to have a baby in 2024, where technological advancements are at an all-time high, in a country with the largest GDP and the highest healthcare expenditure in the world? In 2017, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) reported that half of US counties lack a single OB/GYN, and according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), it’s projected that there will be a shortage of 5,000 OB/GYNs in 2030. With an overloaded workforce and a health system that’s already buckling under the pressure of an aging population of practitioners, provider burnout, excessive student loan debt, care deserts, and the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, what is the future landscape of healthcare going to look like in the US and what will it mean for OB/GYN care specifically? While it may not solve everything, the rise in telemedicine and advancements in remote patient monitoring technologies have played a pivotal role in bridging the gaps in maternal care, making a significant impact by eliminating barriers to access in addition to providing educational resources on prenatal care, lactation, and mental health services.
