Thanks to Rob Chrisman for highlighting an important topic I discussed last week at the Mortgage Bankers Association of Hawaii annual meeting in Honolulu. The so-called "junk fees" by the Biden administration are actually essential industry requirements. These fees play a crucial role in determining property value, ensuring clear title, and protecting both borrowers and investors. Importantly, all fees are disclosed upfront, not subject to change, and were thoroughly vetted and approved by the CFPB during the TRID ratification. Another Mortgage Bankers Association of Hawaii Conference for the books! This year’s theme was Pandamonium: Mastering the Mortgage Rollercoaster 🐼🎢 Some highlights: ⭐️ This was my second year as co-MC with the legend, Rusty Rasmussen! ❤️ My Boss Mom, Wendy, is the 2024 MBAH President. I’m so proud her! She and the Board invested countless hours in planning and executing this event. The conference is always a labor of love. ✈️ Our boss Matt Schilling and his wife, Vickie, flew in from CA to support us! 💡 Nationally acclaimed speakers including Mark A. Jones, Kristin Messerli and Rob Chrisman traveled to Hawaii to speak to our group. We discussed national and local mortgage updates, the psychology of money and future economic outlooks. 🌺 We had an incredible insurance panel with Speaker Scott Saiki, Insurance Commissioner Gordon Ito, Sue Savio of Island Associates, and Alex McLaury from ACW Group. 🌊 Local experts including Colin Moore and Fran Gendrano shared their insights on polarization in America and the NAR settlement, respectively. 🐼 Pete C. brought cheer to all with his panda suit. It’s a blessing to be a part of this conference because of the passionate, kind and brilliant people involved. To my mortgage friends: I hope you can join us next summer!

“Panda”monium 🐼 Mastering the Mortgage Roller Coaster was the theme at the annual Mortgage Bankers Association of Hawaii convention last week in beautiful Waikiki 🏝️ A big shout-out to Pete C. for donning the blow-up panda suit for 2 days! The sessions included excellent guest speakers, including MBA Chairman, Mark A. Jones, Attorney Brian Levy, Robbie & Rob Chrisman, local political leaders and many other fantastic speakers.  Mark talked about the Stockdale Paradox, which really resonated with us and could not be more relevant to the current mortgage environment: “You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end - which you can never afford to lose - with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.” From discussions about the NAR Settlement, hurricane insurance & the importance of condo project maintenance 🛠️, local real estate market trends to learning more about AI & cyber security, the sessions were relevant & very informative. We also learned about IHS, the local leading provider of housing and meals for the homeless whom the MBA of Hawaii supports. 🏡 We wrapped up the event with a Pau Hana cocktail party at the Waikiki Yacht Club, thanks to Shawn O. Kelly! ⛵️ So many folks to thank 🙏🏻 beginning with Wendy O., President of the MBA of Hawaii this year, who so graciously welcomed me and spent time with me when I first attended the event in 2022. Along with her daughter Paige Su, Wendy and the MBAH board put together an excellent event and one I plan to keep on the calendar every year! 🙌🏻 A special thank you to those who invited me into their offices last week. I was blown away when I opened the box I picked up from LEIS BY RON, INC and saw the amazing collection of leis. Every speaker at this year’s Mortgage Bankers Association of Hawaii Annual Conference was presented a beautiful lei. It was a perfect way to aloha and mahalo our guests. Mahalo nui loa to the owner for his years of support. His kind generosity and aloha from the Lord has blessed me and so many others. How fitting for him to be in the lei business. 🌺

The Mortgage Bankers Association of Hawaii annual conference officially starts today. I have really enjoyed meeting its board and members, who gathered last night in beautiful Honolulu. I also had a nice conversation with Rob Chrisman. We discussed the state of the mortgage industry - his vision of the next couple of years aligns with mine - that originations will slowly increase over the next couple of years, and that we continue to be overstaffed as an industry for the amount of volume available. I'm looking forward to today's presentations and discussions!

I delivered my first keynote speech wearing a Hawaiian lei and loved it! The lei represents the spirit of Aloha, which can mean several different things, including hope, joy, love, and a greeting or farewell. Thank you to the Mortgage Bankers Association of Hawaii, their board and their membership for your hospitality!
