America’s many waterways are hotspots of biodiversity and play a critical role in promoting ecological health. That's why our youth crews are working hard to ensure that creeks like this one remain clear of garbage and litter.

Last week, in collaboration with the Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS), we held the orientation for our Maintenance and Infrastructure Fellowship Program at Eastern Washington University. Thirty new fellows from around the country gathered to learn more about the FWS before heading off to officially join their units.

It's National Forest Week! Inaugurated by the National Forest Foundation, this week is a time to celebrate the natural beauty and immense value of our nation’s 154 National Forests. These protected areas serve as places of rest, relaxation, and exploration for millions of visitors every year, and provide safe harbor for species that might otherwise be on the brink of extinction. Earlier this summer, one of our crews got to attend the Black Farmers Co-op anniversary celebration at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge! There they enjoyed a number of fun outdoor activities alongside farmers from the Philadelphia area.

Building healthier ecosystems isn’t rocket science. At St. Paul AME in D.C., the crew worked on invasive plant removal, removing harmful species so that local plants can flourish.

The crew is always working to improve the natural habitat. “Doing work that matters” takes many forms. The crew worked on building a fence at the Pentridge Children’s Garden, helping to beautify the space for the Philadelphia community. 🪴

The crew is never afraid to get their hands dirty and their feet wet, especially if it means improving the natural habitat. Here they are helping clean up Darby Creek, a local waterway in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area.

Many types of bees are at risk due to habitat loss. Our crew began work on the construction of a “bee hotel” — a place where solitary bees can rest, nest and take shelter. 🐝
