Lindsay’s experience is what drives our work at Mirvie. Nobody should have to go through the trauma she endured. In an ideal scenario, Lindsay would have known her risk of preeclampsia months before experiencing symptoms. This would have given her a window to work closely with her care team to put a preventive action plan in place and stay vigilant for signs and symptoms if it did occur. Her story is a heart-wrenching reminder of the urgency of our work because all mothers deserve the healthiest pregnancies possible. Read more about Lindsay’s story and perspectives from Dallas Reed, MD, FACMG, FACOG Reed and Michal Elovitz on what preeclampsia is and how dangerous it can be for pregnant patients and their babies, as well as innovation on the horizon to shift pregnancy health from reactive to proactive at TODAY.com. And thank you to Preeclampsia Foundation for shining a light on stories like Lindsay’s.

As we reflect on Mother’s Day, it’s important to consider how each of us may contribute to solving the #maternalhealth crisis. Every maternal mortality is a heartbreaking tragedy. What’s shocking is that for every mother who dies during pregnancy or childbirth, more than 100 women face near-death experiences because of life-threatening pregnancy complications. It’s unacceptable that as we live in the 21st century surrounded by medical breakthroughs, pregnancy and childbirth today can still be so dangerous. Currently, we lack effective tools to predict who will develop life-threatening complications in pregnancy. For example, #preeclampsia - a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity - was officially recognized as a life-threatening complication more than 100 years ago. However, in over a century, there’s been a failure to uncover the why (underlying biology) and who’s at risk. At Mirvie, we’ve heard countless stories of how rapidly pregnancy complications can transform seemingly routine pregnancies into crises in a matter of days or even hours. We’re excited that innovation like Mirvie’s test is finally on the horizon to objectively predict who's at highest risk for developing pregnancy complications like preeclampsia. We’re at the threshold of shifting pregnancy care from reactive to proactive. However, the speed of progress and number of breakthroughs would greatly increase if more researchers, investors, scientists, and executives across the board took an active role in trying to reverse the rising tide of the maternal health crisis. Read more in Fortune where Holly Maloney of General Catalyst and I highlight how collective action is needed to initiate a transformative shift that maternal health so desperately needs to create a world where every pregnancy is as healthy and as safe as possible.
