About us
We began as a renewable energy company more than a century ago by harnessing the hydropower of the St. Louis River in northeastern Minnesota. Today, we’re an investor-owned electric utility and division of ALLETE Inc. We deliver safe, reliable, affordable and increasingly clean energy to 150,000 customers, including 14 municipal customers and some of the largest energy users in the United States in a 26,000-square-mile region of northern Minnesota rich with mineral deposits and timber. At Minnesota Power, employees at all levels can develop their strengths, broaden their experiences and take on new roles and responsibilities. We’re also proud to be recognized as a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Company for our commitment to supporting service members, military families and veterans.

Plans to modernize our HVDC transmission system got a big lift today with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission's approval of key permits. The planned upgrade uses existing assets in a cost-effective way to support the safe and reliability delivery of essential energy. “Grid reliability and resiliency are critical as we continue to add more carbon-free energy to our energy supply and we experience more extreme weather,” said Josh Skelton, Minnesota Power Chief Operating Officer. “This investment to strengthen transmission and replace aging infrastructure is another integral step in our EnergyForward strategy for a carbon-free future.” Construction on the project could begin this year and cost up to $940 million. https://lnkd.in/gCj4jRvE

Mowers off, sheep out! We're so proud of this innovative (and adorable) way we're moving clean EnergyForward at Jean Duluth Solar.
Minnesota Power is turning off the mowers this summer at Jean Duluth Solar where 100 sheep have been turned out for about three weeks of nontraditional vegetation management. These solar grazers are eating their way across the site’s 8.5 acres, cutting down excess vegetation to keep the panels clear, help pollinator plants thrive—and doing it for less. Solar plus sheep equals one more way we’re moving EnergyForward to a carbon-free future. See these amazing muttons in action and learn more about the decision to invite sheep to Jean Duluth.
