Building on Detroit’s rich history as an engine of change, the transformative project aims to strengthen the city’s existing fabric of community and electrify its economy, while inspiring collective action on the most pressing challenges at the intersection of mobility and society worldwide. The right mobility solutions have massive potential to change the world for the better. Creating them will take the world’s best minds, working together, at Michigan Central.

A few days ago, we welcomed the Black Male Educators Alliance (BMEA) for a day of exploration and learning as we shared the rich history and future vision of Michigan Central. Seventy-five fourth- and fifth-grade boys met influential mobility leaders like Justine Johnson, the Chief Mobility Officer for the State of Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification, and Quentin Messer, Jr. CEcD, the CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. They not only talked about the exciting tech being developed at Michigan Central, but also showed these young students of color the opportunities awaiting them here in Detroit. Our student guests also hung out with teens from YouthTank Detroit and Google Code Next and toured the Book Depository, meeting with some of the more than 100 startups that call Michigan Central home. Thank you to the Black Male Educators Alliance for partnering with us for this memorable experience!

One year and more than 100 startups! We opened last April with 25 startups, and since then, we have grown into a thriving community of 106 member startups and their 673 employees and founders in the fields of mobility, transportation, logistics, climate tech and more. The technology of tomorrow is being created right now, right here in Detroit! “This is proof of the power and potential of the economic engine that we are building here in Detroit, and the realization of Bill Ford and Ford Motor Co.’s vision to create an open platform ecosystem that draws on our region’s incredible talent and legacy of innovation to help solve many of the world’s challenges,” said Josh Sirefman, CEO of Michigan Central. Highlighting the impact of this growth, Newlab CEO Cam Lawrence added, “It’s been inspiring to see the rapid growth at Newlab in Detroit and of the Michigan Central cultural hub. It proves that the work we are doing together is creating a truly differentiated place to build a business and founders are responding,” Interested in joining the Newlab at Michigan Central community?
