Interstate 30 is a heavily trafficked corridor that connects Little Rock, Arkansas, to Dallas, Texas. In Southwest Arkansas near the city of Arkadelphia, two aging bridges on this thoroughfare provided passage over the De Roche Creek. In 2017, the time had come for the crossings to be replaced due to almost continual repairs being needed. The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) and Michael Baker International utilized an innovative Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method known as a lateral slide to replace the existing structures. This was notably the first time that a lateral slide had been used in Arkansas. Under this method, the new bridge superstructures were constructed next to the existing bridges on temporary falsework. Once complete, the existing bridges were demolished, and the new bridges were slid into place. The new bridges now accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction, allowing more people and goods to pass over the creek and reducing delays, which can have economic benefits while also reducing emissions and travel times. As National Safety Month concludes, we are pleased to share the winners of Michael Baker’s S.L.A.M. Safety Awards – the S.L.A.M. Construction Services Winner: Interstate 78 Reconstruction CM/CI, and the S.L.A.M. Field Services Winner: ConocoPhillips Spring Breakup Team. S.L.A.M. (Stop, Look, Assess, Manage) is a safety tool and process to promote safety awareness, recognize hazards and assess and manage risk. The S.L.A.M. Safety Award is an annual award recognizing a project team, service group or office that improved a safety process, contributed to our company’s safety culture and achieved outstanding safety performance over a significant period of time. The Interstate 78 Reconstruction project aimed to reduce the high crash and fatality rates in an 8-mile stretch of road in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, by widening the shoulders along the corridor and adding dedicated climbing lanes for trucks. Michael Baker provided construction inspection and management services from preconstruction through project completion and forensic analysis of the long-life concrete pavement. Michael Baker has conducted hydrologic studies at the Colville River Delta since 1998 for ConocoPhillips Alaska’s North Slope Alpine Development. The project sites are not easily accessible and program set-up is conducted in sub-zero conditions. Michael Baker executes an extensive field program that supports ConocoPhillips’ permit stipulations, permitting and NEPA documentation, early detection of potential flooding and ice movement, and informs infrastructure design of roads, culverts, bridges, gravel pads and pipelines. June 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the start of construction of the New River Gorge Bridge, located in Fayetteville, West Virginia. Michael Baker International and the U.S. Steel's American Bridge Division began building the bridge in June 1974. As the longest steel arch in the country and second-longest steel-arch in the world, at 1,700 feet, the bridge carries four lanes of traffic 876 feet above water level over the New River Gorge and is constructed of COR-TEN steel to minimize future maintenance. Michael Baker provided comprehensive engineering services for the $37 million design and construction of the 3,030.5-foot-long New River Gorge Bridge. Services included location studies, preliminary and final design, alternatives development, environmental assessment, construction-phase services, and in-depth inspection and analysis. The design required 4,759 design calculation sheets and the equivalent of 15 years of full-time man hours. The bridge was completed in October 1977 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 14, 2013, after only 34 years, for its exceptional impact on local transportation and its engineering significance. #NewRiverGorgeBridge #EngineeringExcellence #50thAnniversary
