About us
Mental illness isn’t something that individuals or families should have to walk through alone. We are passionate about walking alongside and advocating for individuals with mental health conditions and their family caregivers. The Mental Health Association of Alameda County (MHAAC) is a nonprofit organization that has been advocating for individuals with mental illness in the Alameda, San Mateo, and Marin Counties since 1958. Governed by a Board of Directors and staffed by qualified individuals who are trained in trauma-informed care, and passionate about standing by people with mental health conditions, MHAAC runs multiple programs to help individuals and their families thrive. Serving over 24,000 individuals every year, we are proud to offer free support, education, and mental health resources to family caregivers. Our programs center around supporting family caregivers of those with mental health issues and advocating for patients’ rights. We assist patients of inpatient facilities in representing themselves at hearings, we assist individuals and families with complaints or grievances to file, and we pair families with peers who have experienced and understand the challenges of children’s behavioral or emotional conditions. We also host workshops to help African American families talk about and cope with mental health conditions and substance abuse in their families.

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to recognize the mental health challenges that men face. Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia, and eating disorders are five major mental health issues that affect men. Low levels of testosterone are also linked to depression, stress, and mood swings, particularly in older men. Unfortunately, men are less likely to seek help due to social norms and reluctance to talk about their struggles. Discover 3 less-known reasons why men don't talk about mental health from Mental Health America: https://lnkd.in/dhjqsUF If you or someone you know needs support, contact the Mental Health Association of Alameda County to talk to an advocate 👉 https://mhaac.org/contact . . . #MensHealthMonth #MentalHealthAssociation #BreaktheStigma #MHAAC

May is Women's Health Month, a time to focus on the unique mental health challenges women face. Clinical depression isn't a “normal” part of being a woman—it's a real challenge faced by millions. According to Mental Health of America, about one in every eight women can expect to develop clinical depression during their lifetime, and approximately 12 million women in the United States experience clinical depression each year. In addition to this, many women may experience depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder during or after pregnancy. Let's break the stigma and create a supportive space for women to discuss their mental health. Together, we can make a difference. . . . #MentalHealthAssociation #WomensHealthMonth #MentalHealthAwareness
