Today, we are extremely dependent on imports from China - we need to build our capacity and knowledge on how to extract and process critical raw materials in Europe. As a research and innovation program, Swedish Metals & Minerals has an important role as Europe now steps into this major area of development, said our chairman and CEO of Svemin, Maria Sunér, when she spoke about the program's seminar at Almedalen. ----- The new Swedish Metals & Minerals program is part of Impact Innovation - Sweden's innovation initiative for the 2030s, with funding from Vinnova, Formas, ett forskningsråd för hållbar utveckling, The Swedish Energy Agency International and industry. The program is a strategic and long-term effort to solve global societal challenges and accelerate the transition to a sustainable society. It is led by Jernkontoret in collaboration with Luleå tekniska universitet, LTU Business, Sustainable Steel Region, Svemin, Svenska Gjuteriföreningen, Svenskt Aluminium and Örebro universitet.

Is it difficult enough to open a mine in Sweden? The Viscaria copper mine recently received an environmental permit after the mining industry's toughest environmental review to date in Sweden, which they talked about at a seminar at Norra Scen, Almedalen. - Opening a mine means lowering groundwater levels, releasing metals and interfering with nature. It should be difficult to open a mine. It is not for everyone. We see that Swedish environmental legislation is a tough competitive advantage. We actually think that it is just as difficult as it should be to open a mine, says Jorgen Olsson, CEO, Viscaria. They want to reopen a closed mine located next to LKAB's area in Kiruna, directly adjacent to the ore railway.  - Europe has a constant deficit of copper, and today imports more than 50% And we are actually going in the wrong direction. In ten years, we will import even more. Responsibly produced copper is needed, says Jorgen Olsson. Within the EU, the self-sufficiency of minerals is a high priority issue, both from a security and climate perspective.  - We will be one of the copper mines with the lowest carbon footprint in the world, says Jorgen Olsson. The seminar focused on the environmental assessment and how to build all the elements needed to reopen the mine.  - We have been very transparent, and have made all the documents from the environmental assessment public. As far as I know, no one else has done that, said Peter Wihlborg, Environmental and Sustainability Manager, Viscaria. Our new call for proposals focusing on social innovation is now open - and the scope is wide! So think outside the box ⬛ 💡where we can improve the attractiveness of society, skills supply, education or other social goals 👇.  Applies to prestudies or research projects with funding of up to SEK 1 million. Deadline September 10.    This includes the call for social innovation: 🌍Social objectives: Improving community relations and addressing both positive and negative impacts of mining and metal production. 👩💻Skills supply: Making the industrial sector an attractive career option and strengthening the education system. 📘Education: raising interest in science and technology and improving mobility between academia and industry. 📄Policy development and standards: Create predictable permitting processes and harmonize policies to support sustainable development. 👫Attractiveness: Improve community and company attractiveness to facilitate recruitment and retention. 💡Think big and creatively about how you could contribute to these goals! On June 21, 2024, the European Commission launched its new innovation center, INCITE, with over 900 registrants, 250 of whom were on site in Seville.
