The FTC’s new request for “surveillance pricing” information from big companies is concerning. By using information they have legally obtained to set unilateral prices, firms are able to adjust to market conditions efficiently, allowing for maximum output and consumer benefits. Government efforts to scrutinize such pricing casts a shadow on the workings of the marketplace, and may distort competition among firms. Relatedly, it may lead firms to “pull their punches” and not respond effectively to new marketplace information, reducing market efficiency.

Had a great time presenting on Capitol Hill yesterday on a Tech and Foreign Policy panel. My comments focused specifically on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, two pieces of the tech pie deeply tangled in foreign affairs. In recent years, protecting our AI leading edge has been the impetus for broad scale export controls, a flash point vis-a-vis China, and a clear reason to engage with nations without the resources to build an AI sector. Cybersecurity meanwhile is a traditionally 'off the radar' zone of tech policy, yet an area that could grow increasingly salient as large-scale critical infrastructure incidents such as CrowdStrike's recent outage, the Change Healthcare hack, and the Colonial Pipeline outage directly impact the day to day lives of American citizens. Inherently borderless - confronting cyber challenges means facing adversaries abroad to a degree, but also investing in collaboration with adversaries including China to spot and mitigate vulnerabilities.

The more computational power companies gain by utilizing #AI, the more you’ll see shifting prices in local shops and restaurants. But, as we learned a few months ago when Wendy's announced plans to increase its menu prices during its busiest hours, the customer backlash can be fierce. That's part of the reason why #AI's potential to unleash across-the-board dynamic pricing is gaining attention from policymakers and regulators. But for those of us who care about sustainability and an inclusive economy, more dynamic pricing in our daily lives should actually be cause for excitement.
