Learn more about Mia Lopez, the inaugural curator of Latinx Art at McNay Art Museum in San Antonio! This emergent curatorial position was created as part of the Leadership in Art Museums initiative, which supports museums in addressing racial equity within staff leadership roles. This need was highlighted through a series of studies undertaken by Mellon Foundation, which illustrate the gap in racial equity among museum staff across the US. “I hope that I am the first of many, that other institutions in San Antonio and beyond are able to bring in scholars and curators that have this interest and expertise," says Lopez. #MellonFoundation #ArtMuseumLeadership #GrantNews

"The work of telling stories in public places is eternal work," says Mellon Foundation President Elizabeth Alexander. This week, the city of #Boston announced a citywide campaign to reimagine public art with a $3 million grant from Mellon — the largest Boston has ever received for public art programming. "My hope is that we've just widened the aperture, and that the work continues in a way that recognizes us in all of our power and beauty." 📖 Read more about this initiative at on.mellon.org/3SjITtQ

"Darren Walker is a visionary, one who has led always with the light of justice and empowerment. In the field of philanthropy, he is both a trailblazer and an enabler; he has championed and brought into this work me and so many others, teaching us how best to deploy vast resources with strategic intensity for the benefit of our broader society. "Even before he became its president, the Ford Foundation was a beacon for human rights, public health, and freedom of expression in all forms. It was Darren who fortified that mission to help strengthen our global community with the values of equity and inclusivity. "Darren Walker, my beloved colleague and brother, I await with excitement your next chapter of service to the greater good." -Elizabeth Alexander, President of Mellon Foundation 📷 (left): Elizabeth Alexander and Darren Walker at NYPL Schomburg Center 90th Anniversary Gala in 2015, courtesy of Ben Rosser/BFA.com 📷 (right): Elizabeth Alexander and Darren Walker at LACMA Art+Film Gala in 2023, courtesy of Stefanie Keenan/Getty Images

How do you tell the visual story of a city? 🎨 In 1970, the US Army Corps of Engineers approached visual artist Judith F. Baca to assist in “beautifying” an empty section of the LA River network. Baca co-founded The Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) and, over the course of five years, transformed the 2,754 ft stretch of concrete into an expansive mural. For Baca, the project was an opportunity to “recover the stories of those who were disappeared along with the river,” memorializing the people excluded from more dominant accounts of Los Angeles’s history.
