  • This month, 117 new-to-practice nurses—our largest cohort EVER—completed their nursing residencies! Our year-long nurse residency program, accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), supports new graduates as they transition to professional practice. We are so proud of this great group of nurses and excited to see the positive impact they will make not only in the lives of our patients, but on the nursing profession as they continue to grow in their careers. Way to go! Photo #1: Great looking group! Photo #2: Nurse resident Jorge Aparicio receives hugs from nurse educator Lucy Shivnan. Photo #3: Nurse educators Amarachi Anudokem and Cassie Graziano award a completion certificate to nurse resident Raisa Bonner. Photo #4: Nurse Austin Yockey won the Butterfly Award, which recognizes a nurse resident who has grown tremendously in their first year of practice. He is photographed with Jani North Saale, RN, vice president of Nursing Operations. Photo #5: Nurses Nadine Rong, Collette Smith, and Bridget Crimmins won “Clinical Coach of the Cohort” awards in recognition of the lasting impact they made on their orientees. Only Collette was at the ceremony to accept her certificate. She's all smiles here! Photo #6: Our nurse residents complete evidence-based practice research projects on their units, with a goal to improve outcomes for our patients and elevate our care environment. After each completion ceremony, the residents present their projects to nursing leaders. L-R: Nurse residents Chinenye Eneremadu and Sarai Chavarria, and nurse educator Meghan Perotta

  • Maternal and infant mortality rates in D.C. are some of the highest in the nation. And we are committed to improving the health and well-being of mothers and infants in neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River. • One of our patient’s siblings was so impressed by nurse Kelley Jack’s care for their loved one that they nominated her for The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. They wrote, “She was a true advocate, engaging in medical questions with the provider team, calling dietary to get the right food, cleaning and brushing my sister’s teeth, and re-positioning her every two hours to prevent bed sores.” Thank you, Kelley, for your compassionate care, and congratulations on this well-deserved award! #DAISYAwardThe DAISY Foundation

There is something just a bit special about caring for one of our own. And this situation involved two nursing units, several nurses and support staff, physicians, and an OR team. One of our nurses, 36 weeks pregnant, arrived at work not feeling well. One of her colleagues agreed the nurse did not look well and alerted unit Nursing Director Meron Zikarge, who notified Labor and Delivery they were on the way with a patient. Soon after arrival in L&D, it was clear the mother and baby were in distress. The OB team and Anesthesia delivered the baby minutes after the patient entered the OR, and appropriate care was given to mom and baby. For seeing something and saying something to quickly transitioning to the safe delivery of the baby and care for the associate-mom, the following associates were presented a SPIRIT Shout Out from President Gregory J. Argyros, MD: Unit secretary Rachel Thorpe, nurses Mekidim Tasew, Abrefi Osei-Akoto, Genevieve Meehan, Linda Snowden, Kaiya Lindsey, Korrin Gholston, and Chaniece Simmons, Dr. Marie-Anne Draoui and Dr. Lindsey Alpeter. Congratulations to these awesome team members! Top photo L-R: (Labor and Delivery team) Kaiya Lindsey, RN; Linda Snowden, RN; and Rachel Thorpe Bottom photo L-R: President Gregory J.
