More positive findings about the success and impact of hospital at home, this time from a USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics study of approximately 1,100 respondents that was published this week in JAMA... "Hospital-level care provided in a patient’s own home is appealing to a majority of people for its convenience, comfort and effectiveness," according to the study. Most survey respondents felt they would recover faster if cared for at home, rather than in the hospital, and that they felt safe being treated at home. Researchers say their study provides important insights about patient and family preferences as policymakers weigh whether to extend the pandemic-era program that allowed hospitals to provide care at home. “Patients of course want the best-quality care, but often prefer to be at home, especially if technology allows them to work closely with their physician team toward recovery,” said Melissa A. Frasco, research scientist at the Schaeffer Center. The research also found that 82% of respondents felt comfortable with managing a patient’s medications at home, and 67% reported willingness to provide more in-depth care such as wound care. NEJM Catalyst published research earlier this week focus on Emergency Department in Home (EDiH), a care delivery model for acute, episodic care for patients in their homes. EDiH care is emerging as a vital resource for patient access to care as "ED demand exceeds emergency care supply". Congratulations to all of the authors and all of those who have supported real innovation in the delivery of care. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gqH6uAzf

Decentralized care models, including hospital at home care, now have a long track record of relieving pressures like strained clinical resources and chronically overwhelmed emergency and even primary care resources where shortages have persisted since before the pandemic. Decentralized models are emerging as a stabilizing force for the healthcare infrastructure, creating avenues for patients to receive needed care. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gGWN4F59

An interesting survey reported on by Home Health Care News highlights what Medically Home sees on a daily basis—that most patients would like to receive care at home. Interestingly, survey data also showed that among these respondents, older people may be less aware of hospital at home as an option than others. It's important that all patients have awareness of what options may be available to them so that they can choose the care setting that best suits their needs and preferences. Pneumonia landed 86-year-old Florence in the ER one evening. After testing confirmed she would need antibiotics and continued oxygen to support recovery, Florence and her daughter, Joy, assumed a stay in the hospital was inevitable. When they were offered an alternative – returning home to receive hospital-level care – it put both women at ease. Previous hospital stays had been stressful, with Joy worrying about her mom’s care away from the home they share together, and Florence experiencing a hospital-acquired infection. At home, Florence was likely to be up walking and building her lung capacity.
