Sec. McIlwain steps out for a great cause - celebrating cleaner commutes for our students. The World Resources Institute, in partnership with the Bezos Foundations, hosted a gala on Wednesday, July 27th, to celebrate the Roadmap to 100 Electric School Bus Initiative, at the Maryland Museum of Industry. Supporters and Champions donned yellow in the spirit of the iconic school bus. The gala included remarks from Secretary McIlwain, Sun Gander, Director of the Electric School Bus Initiative, and award recipients. There are about 8,000 school buses in Maryland. Every year, about 510 are replaced (which cost the schools about $115K per diesel bus). Baltimore welcomed its first installment of 25 electric school buses back in January—and they were PROVIDED TO neighborhoods that could benefit from clean buses the most. We have roughly 300 Electric Buses in Maryland, but our future is bright…more electric buses are coming!

Last week Secrtary McIlwain visited Calvert, St. Mary's and Charles counties. Each day she met with elected officials, local government and leaders. It was a wonderful chance for her to see first hand some of the struggles and lots of successes each area is having. At this point she's visited almost half the counties in the state. If she hasn't been to your county yet keep an eye out soon it's going to happen.

What a great day down in St. Mary’s County! After a breakfast meeting with lots of local leaders it was off to the Piney Point area to learn about some shoreline projects. Secretary McIlwain had the opportunity to chat with some constituents about their concerns with a local project while there. The day was rounded out with a visit to Sasafrass River Farms.

Today Secretary McIlwain was in Calvert County to meet with local elected officials. She toured some local sites with stormwater issues but also saw a very successful stormwater project that’s working perfectly. She was wowed by the success of their county’s recycling rates. The grand finale of the day was a tour of the Calvert County Nuclear Power Plant.
