Sue Davies said, “Managers are key to both hiring and retention: encouraging them to be innovative and creative in their hiring practices is crucial.” Our Chief Human Resources Officer recently participated in a panel, as part of Intelligent Insurer's Talent Month series. This second report delves into successful initiatives to retain and develop talent within the re/insurance sector. During the discussion, Sue stressed the role of managers in fostering an inclusive environment. She added that providing global experiences through formal secondments and short-term projects could be a differentiator for new entrants and existing employees alike. Sue also pointed out the central role of partnerships in talent retention, mentioning Markel’s partnerships with the Dive In Festival and the National African American Insurance Association as examples of how collaborations can foster a more inclusive and attractive industry environment. “Effective partnerships can have a multiplier effect, rather than everyone working in silos,” she explained. Another Richmond Summer Events Series gathering is in the books! ☀️ Two of our employee-led resource groups, the Markel Women’s Network (MWN) and the Markel Asian Professionals (MAP) Network, jointly hosted an afternoon of sips, snacks and socializing. Attendees connected with their colleagues while enjoying refreshments from Tier7 Eatery. The MWN once again partnered with the YWCA Richmond for a diaper drive. "One of MWN’s goals for this cycle is to drive the advancement of women leaders," said MWN Richmond Lead Sarah Parramore. "Through partnering with non-profits, MWN can create awareness of organizations in our community whose strategic goals align with our own. The YWCA is committed to empowering women, and we are grateful to be able to support them through another successful diaper drive." Members of the MAP leadership team shared information with attendees about their mission statement, pillars and upcoming events. MAP Networking Chair Rahul Shah shared, “ERGs help diversify our portfolio at Markel, enhance community outreach, and things like that where folks from different backgrounds can join and have that working collaboration.” Learn more about our employee-led resource groups here: https://lnkd.in/eRhDJtzh. #WeAreMarkel

As part of Intelligent Insurer's Talent Month series, Sue Davies participated in a panel with other human resources leaders in the insurance industry. This first report focuses on strategies to attract more of the right people. Sue spoke about the importance of effective marketing to attract the right talent. “The sector generally is continuing to up our game on marketing careers in insurance,” she said. “The sheer diversity of career opportunities that exist, and the importance of everything we do, make this where we can all continue to raise the game.” Sue also suggested breaking away from tradition when appealing to new talent pools. She cited Markel’s recruitment program for veterans and individuals returning from career breaks as examples of innovative recruitment strategies and emphasized retention. “We can’t take our eyes off the prize in terms of continuing to make sure we’re developing our internal talent pipeline,” she added. As Pride Month comes to an end, we're looking forward to a hands-on opportunity with the Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity. Markel is proud to be a sponsor of this year’s PRIDE Build, which will begin mid-summer and continue through the fall. Once assigned a build day, professionals will guide our employee volunteers through some work on a home, which will then be given to a family in need. Members of PRISM, our LGBTQ+ employee-led resource group, attended a Habitat for Humanity kick-off event yesterday to build excitement for this chance to give back to the community.
