A big thank you to our friends at Brand New for their kind words and thoughtful review of our latest work with Quilt.
Pump Fiction • New Logo and Identity for Quilt by Manual — 🧑💼 ABOUT THE CLIENT Established in 2022, Quilt is a home climate system that offers an electric, energy-efficient, ductless heat pump that uses smart technology to cool and heat homes, saving homeowners money and cut emissions. Founded by three former Google employees and staffed with key recruits from Apple, Nest, and Tesla, the product is a response to HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems being responsible for 70% of all fossil fuel used in the home, making homes accountable for 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United Sates. Consisting of three physical elements — a digital dial, an indoor unit, and an outdoor unit — Quilt works like traditional mini-split systems but is infinitely more stylish (and advanced), designed to seamlessly blend into any home. • 🦸 FROM MANUAL “Our challenge was to visualize the qualities of Quilt, particularly the gentle flow of warm and cool air. To visualize the invisible airflow, we leveraged typography, technology, and motion. Collaborating with creative technologist Kiel Danger Mutschelknaus, creator of Space Type Generator, we developed a generative type tool using Processing. This tool allows typography to mimic the subtle flow of air, creating a ‘quilt’ of air enveloping a space. The Quilt type generator enables typography to adopt waveforms and create 2D animations that pulsate, radiate, and swipe, reflecting the intelligent sensing technology that allows for room-by-room climate control.” • 🧑💻 BRAND NEW’S REACTION Overall, this is a sophisticated yet not stuffy identity that establishes Quilt as a premium yet relatively attainable luxury, all with a strong sense of being a design-led product and system from start to finish. — #reviewed #branding #identity #2024 #brandnewbyucllc #beforeandafter #consumerproducts #illustration #isometric #serif #wordmark Link: https://lnkd.in/gkiEwV-U

The energy we use in our homes accounts for 20% of all U.S. emissions, with 54% of that energy spent on heating and cooling—mostly using fossil fuels and often very inefficiently. Although efficient all-electric heat pump systems have existed for years, they are considered unattractive, obtrusive, and difficult to use. Enter Quilt. Quilt was founded to accelerate the energy transition by moving homes off fossil fuels with all-electric heating and cooling systems that are as beautiful as they are intuitive. Designed to seamlessly blend into any home with an unapologetically architectural design, the Quilt system offers room-by-room control, advanced sensors to prevent energy waste in empty rooms, and personal energy data reports for more informed home climate management. Quilt came to us to build a brand that reflected their future-focused mission. We crafted an identity and experience around the brand idea: Better Climate by Design. From the logo and custom typeface to 3D imaging and photography, to illustration and kinetic typography, the resulting identity balances technical precision with humanist warmth.
