One of the nation's largest health systems today announced a partnership with Mahmee to enhance maternal health. Starting this month, Providence will introduce the Mahmee Membership at Providence Saint John's Health Center. This distinguished hospital, one of 52 within the national, not-for-profit Catholic health system, is located in Santa Monica and is part of the broader network spanning seven states – Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. Together, we are enhancing lactation care, enriching the postpartum experience, and offering seamless support for new parents as they transition from the hospital. In hospitals, doulas are proving to be cost-saving champions, curbing expenses related to readmissions, ER visits, and postpartum depression/anxiety admissions. Check out A. Alex Yarijanian and Asim Malik's article for Becker's Healthcare titled "Unlocking Financial Benefits: Doulas in Capitated Contract Hospitals," to learn more. One study cited in the article found a staggering 64.7% reduction in the odds of postpartum depression and anxiety for women receiving doula care during labor and birth. This provides a compelling rationale for integrating doulas into healthcare systems, particularly in hospitals under capitated contracts. That’s just the beginning. Hospitals can also negotiate maternity supplemental payments for live Medicaid births by including doula care. It's a win-win situation that rewards hospitals for their commitment to enhanced patient care. At Mahmee, we're passionate about integrating doulas into hospital systems.
