The feature film The Bikeriders, directed by Jeff Nichols and inspired by the eponymous photobook by Danny Lyon, launches today in cinemas worldwide 🏍️ Originally published in 1968, Lyon’s seminal series is an authentic, personal and uncompromising four-year account of American biker culture. A student and avid motorcyclist, Lyon began photographing motorcycle races in the early 1960s, offering an unseen insight into a misunderstood American counterculture and subverting its commercialized image. In 1965, Lyon joined the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, documenting them as a member for two years. Through a combination of photographs, personal texts and transcribed interviews, his immersion in this environment enabled him to craft intimate, first-hand narratives of the club and its members, yielding an enduring record of rebellion and personal freedom. Cristina de Middel's approach to photography is characterized by an enduring curiosity and playfulness. In her online course, Stranger than Reality, De Middel eschews setting strict rules or axioms in favour of encouraging viewers to discover and cultivate a unique photographic voice. In this clip, De Middel walks viewers through her method of pre-visualising work by translating ideas to sketches, and how this was channeled to create images for her series Journey to the Center. "The tide was coming in now and the water reached the farewell letter to my family in my breast pocket,” Robert Capa wrote in his illustrated memoir, Slightly Out of Focus. "Behind the human cover of the last two guys, I reached the beach. I threw myself flat and my lips touched the earth of France. I had no desire to kiss it." Today marks 80 years since the Normandy landings, also known as D-Day, when Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France during World War II in what became the largest seaborne invasion in history. Robert Capa documented preparations for the invasion, making the voyage from Weymouth, England to Normandy with the Allied forces and accompanying the US 16th Infantry Regiment on their perilous mission to Omaha beach with his cameras. His images taken during the advance serve as an invaluable historical record of the operation and mark a significant moment in the history of photojournalism. A selection of these images is featured in the exhibition Robert Capa: Icons, currently showing at Les Franciscaines Deauville in Normandy until October 13. A new feature-length documentary about the life of Ernest Cole premiered in the Special Screenings section at this year's 77th annual Festival de Cannes, receiving the L’Oeil d’or prize — the award for best documentary. Written, directed and produced by filmmaker Raoul Peck and featuring actor LaKeith Stanfield as the voice of Ernest Cole, the documentary aims to uncover more about the life and work of the South African photographer and activist, from life under apartheid to life in exile. Titled Ernest Cole: Lost and Found, the project emerged after the 2017 discovery of more than 60,000 of Cole’s long-lost 35mm negatives and their return to the Ernest Cole Family Trust, and follows the release of Cole’s book, The True America, earlier this year by Aperture, in which Peck writes in the preface, “It will take generations to decipher and grasp your legacy.” Read more about the film: https://bit.ly/4bFh5YK © Ernest Cole / Magnum Photos
