About us
Serving Illinois since 1867, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) is a statewide, not-for-profit social service agency of the three Illinois synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The demographics of clients served by LSSI generally reflect those of Illinois’ population, with one important exception—more than 80 percent of clients report an annual household income under $15,000, compared to just 12 percent of all Illinois households. The organization provides critical programs for the state’s most vulnerable residents including foster care, mental health services, alcohol and drug treatment, affordable senior housing, residential programs for people with developmental disabilities, and programs that help formerly incarcerated individuals integrate back into society.

LSSI works hard to advance equity and reduce racial disparities within the foster care system by participating in Lutheran Services in America’s Results Innovation Lab/Results Network 2023-2024 Collaborative. We joined our friends from Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois and organizations across the country at Bethel New Life in Chicago to celebrate and advance the work by the cohort this past year. All of LSSI’s foster care program directors receive local racial demographic breakdowns to better connect clients with service providers, increase client engagement, and, ultimately, reunite families. LSA’s Results Innovation Lab has already reached 17,000 youth and their families in the United States. https://lnkd.in/gFGJ3gA3

LSSI was honored by Illinois Collaboration on Youth at its annual meeting in Champaign last week for being the top contributor to its Equity and Access Fund. ICOY champions the safety, well-being, and success of all Illinois’ children, youth, and families by connecting and strengthening the organizations that serve them and by being a collective voice for policy and practice. LSSI is a proud member of ICOY, along with other community-based child welfare, youth service, and juvenile justice providers across Illinois. On hand to accept this honor were LSSI Chief Operating Officer Ruth Jajko (middle) and LSSI Executive Director of Children's Community Services Jere Murry (right), pictured with ICOY’s CEO Andi Durbin (left).

"Take me out to the ballgame..." Last weekend, LSSI staff spent an evening at the ballpark rooting for the Chicago White Sox! A huge thanks to Chicago White Sox Charities and their community tickets donation program for providing the tickets.
