The Learning Landscapes Challenge, a $2.2 million competition sponsored by Siegel Family Endowment and the Walton Family Foundation to design and build future-ready K-12 education environments, recently announced 40 Phase 1 winners with ideas to transform learning. This week, Luminary Labs attended a Congressional briefing on the power of education research to inform #teaching and #learning hosted by Alliance for Learning Innovation (ALI). Leaders discussed the short-term and long-term social and economic benefits of investing in education R&D. The event featured insights from Institute of Education Sciences and National Science Foundation (NSF) as well as Federation of American Scientists, EdTrust, Lincoln University, Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), and ISTE. Luminary Labs has worked in partnership with federal and nonprofit clients to develop innovative approaches — including participatory design, pilots, edtech prototyping, accelerators, incubators, ecosystem-building, and prize competitions — to expand access to education. The AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge is a global $100 million initiative from the Bezos Earth Fund to explore new ideas for multiplying the impact of climate and nature efforts using modern AI. Designed and produced by Luminary Labs, the Grand Challenge will unfold over three rounds, providing funding and resources to help organizations explore how the responsible use of modern AI may supercharge efforts to help protect our planet and our future. To harness the full potential of pull mechanisms, leaders must understand what they are, how to use them effectively, and how to secure funding. Our curated reading list provides valuable resources that answer crucial questions and offer a vision for the future. In economics, supply and demand stories often make problem-solving seem simple. But when it comes to groundbreaking innovations that don’t yet exist, the market needs a helping hand. That’s where “push mechanisms” like grants, policies, corporate R&D, and venture capital come into play. However, push mechanisms alone aren’t always enough. When an innovation is too early, risky, or challenging, or when faster results are needed, “pull mechanisms” can be the key to success.
