Techtivity isn't scheduled until tomorrow, but that didn't stop us from having fun with our #Rendever Virtual Reality tonight. We went on a hot air balloon ride, snorkeling in a coral reef, bike riding over the Golden Gate Bridge, and hiking in the Grand Canyon without leaving the Fremont Room! With the first week of spring last week, we made sock bunnies during arts and crafts! Don't worry, the socks were clean and new. We have an AMAZING partnership with the Clark County Library System @lvccld. Our home library is fully stocked with books, movies, magazines and audio books that our residents can "check out". The West Charleston location came and brought amazing #StaySharp kits for us to borrow. Yesterday was Leap Day and we were lucky enough to have the kids from West Charleston Enrichment Academy over for some fun Leap Day activities! We started with a flinging chicken or flamingo contest (where we learned that it's harder than we thought and that we ALL need more practice) and ended with a frog jumping competition. The frogs went MUCH better than the chickens. We don't always have big events for our #UNLV medical students when they come to Lumina. The other day a few students stopped by and just spent some time with one of our residents enjoying the nice weather, talking about his restaurant in Chicago, watching sports, and having "guy time". Hydration is something that Solera and Lumina take very seriously. So seriously that it is one of our signature programs! We have water stations throughout the building for residents and guests to take care of their body and mind! Of course, Chef Shilo can't let us drink plain old water. At Lumina, we LOVE catching our caregivers doing good things! Sometimes our residents just need a little reassurance and TLC. This little bit of pampering was just what the doctor ordered! Did you know that our caregivers go through more than 60 hours of dementia and safety specific training within the first three months of employment at Lumina? One of those is an EIGHT HOUR intensive which is part of the qualifications to become a Certified Dementia Practitioner. Today was dental day! Our new partner, Doorstep Dental, came and helped shine up our pearly whites! Dr Sloan and his assistant were so very patient and kind and gentle. We have some amazing technology at Lumina, but they can take images and have them on their computer almost instantly! They did a fantastic job explaining everything they were doing and making sure we each got just what we needed. They even make house calls for those in the valley who need someone who understands dementia AND their teeth cleaned. Did you know that we have monthly Resident Council and Food for Thought meetings? Resident Council allows residents to voice their concerns about their home, share their wishes about where they would like to go on outings, and give their opinions about activities and other programs. Food for Thought is a meeting with the Culinary team to discuss the menu, food for special events, and anything else food related that residents want to share. Valentine's Day was a week long event starting last week! Last Wednesday our volunteer, Wanda, helped us make decorations for our apartments. On Friday the UNLV Medical Students helped us make wreaths for our doors and Chef had us make heart shaped cereal treats. Wednesday brought Julie and Gregory from The Key with carnations, fancy beverages, and they asked us all our love advice (feel free to share YOURS in the comments). Finally, the kids from West Charleston Enrichment Academy came on Thursday and brought us delicious cookies to decorate together. There is just so much love between Lumina and our community partners!
