About us

A $275 million expansion in 2011 further established the Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium (ICCLOS) a powerhouse destination for the largest events in the country – including the 2012 Super Bowl. With its striking contemporary look and sense of openness, the Indiana Convention Center redefines the character of a trade show and meeting venue. One of the largest convention centers in America, the center is connected by skywalks to more hotel rooms than any other city in the nation. Also linked to the center is a four-story urban shopping mall, surrounded by more than 200 restaurants and clubs, well-known sports venues, and a 10-block state park that features top museums, green space and a convenient canal walk. Opened in 2008, Lucas Oil Stadium is a state-of-the-art retractable roof, multi-purpose facility seating over 67,000 fans while featuring spectacular views of the downtown Indianapolis skyline. The stadium’s unique features include its flexibility in design and ability to accommodate a multitude of events beyond NFL football and NCAA basketball, including concerts, national conventions, trade shows, IHSAA tournaments, international and national band competitions, and numerous other national and local amateur sports events. With over $3 billion in convention industry investments, no other city in the nation can match Indianapolis’ collection of upgrades and developments.

Updates

  • When Andy Mallon began his role as Executive Director of the Capital Improvement Board (CIB) in 2019, he knew it would be a challenge and was ready for it. What he didn’t know was that the pandemic would soon come calling and bring with it the challenge of finding ways for events to safely take place and in many cases, rescheduling those events that could not. Thanks to his leadership and the hard work of his team and colleagues in the industry, the Indiana Convention Center and other CIB facilities fared much better than others around the US. What’s even more remarkable is that under Andy’s leadership, the City was able to find some wins. For example, the Indiana Convention Center will host the Sweets and Snacks Expo for multiple years and Lucas Oil Stadium hosted the entire NCAA March Madness in 2021, just to name a few. The CIB and its facilities have since bounced back with business looking stronger than ever. Business is back to pre-pandemic levels and the Signia by Hilton Indianapolis hotel and Indiana Convention Center expansion are under construction and expected to be completed in 2026. The calendars of the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium are both packed with impressive arrays of events and very few dark days. The renovation of Gainbridge Fieldhouse and its addition of the Bicentennial Unity Plaza draw rave reviews. The way CIB facilities survived the pandemic and have bounced back doing better than ever required a leader whose influence went far beyond his immediate team. We are thankful for Andy’s leadership and congratulate him on receiving the well-earned Indianapolis Business Journal Indiana 250 Most Influential Leaders recognition!

  • The Capital Improvement Board (CIB) mourns the loss of one of Indianapolis's most revered and dedicated leaders, Jim Morris. During his time working with former Mayor Richard Lugar, Jim helped breathe life and purpose into the CIB and Indiana Convention Center, which opened while Morris served as Mayor Lugar’s Chief of Staff. All of the CIB’s venues, including Lucas Oil Stadium, the Indiana Convention Center, Gainbridge Fieldhouse and Victory Field, are in some sense monuments to Morris’ impact on Indianapolis and the vibrant tourism and hospitality industry he helped bring to life. They’re all on the Indy map thanks to seeds he planted and the way he nurtured the work he started. Morris was an integral leader in the development of Market Square Arena, the forerunner of Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and the Hoosier Dome, the forerunner to Lucas Oil Stadium. He helped establish the Indiana Sports Corp., which brings the biggest, best and brightest sports events to CIB buildings. Additionally, Jim was a “lifetime member” and two-time board president of Visit Indy and is credited with leading early efforts to make Indianapolis a top-tier convention city. Jim Morris was a consistent and vocal champion of the CIB and its role in the last 50 years of the City's and State’s successes. “Jim saw greatness in Indianapolis and in all the people with whom he worked over the past six decades to make it great,” said CIB Executive Director Andy Mallon. “He supported all of us and wanted us all to know each other and work together to be better friends and build a better city and state. We now inherit Jim’s legacy of kind, humble, and ambitious collaboration to show our visitors and the world how wonderful Indianapolis and its people are.” “The impact of Jim’s passing on the City of Indianapolis and the State of Indiana is impossible to quantify,” added CIB Board President Marci Reddick. “His wise, thoughtful, and inclusive leadership will be missed. No single person can fill the void that Jim left behind. It will take many people working together for the good of Indianapolis and Indiana to continue Jim’s work and honor his legacy.”

  • Thanks to REjournals for recognizing Capital Improvement Board (CIB) Executive Director Andy Mallon with your Executive Of The Year award!  Mallon is a visionary leader who works to ensure that Indy remains at the forefront of the hospitality and tourism industry and that CIB facilities lead the way in making us a world-class destination.  In addition to having responsibility for the CIB's day-to-day operations, Mallon oversaw major facility projects such as the Gainbridge Fieldhouse renovation and addition of the Bicentennial Unity Plaza. He is currently managing the sixth expansion of the Indiana Convention Center and construction of the Signia by Hilton Indianapolis hotel, which will open in late 2026. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

  • We always welcome feedback of any kind, but positive feedback like this is gold. 💌 The writer of this "love letter" asked us to share it with our City - it's really for YOU Indy, so happy reading: "... I run the souvenir store at Circle Centre ... I’m on your email list for events each month. I wanted to take a minute to let you know how often I hear visitors tell me how clean, friendly & so much to see & do in our city. I had a young man here yesterday for work, he’s from Argentina. He came back this morning just to thank me & said he loved our city & would be back. Please pass this email to others who might like hearing YOU GUYS & others in the city are doing a fantastic job. Visitors are impressed & they notice our city." Way to go Indy! 💙 👏 ❤️

  • Today we officially broke ground on the sixth expansion of the Indiana Convention Center and construction of the connected 40-story Signia by Hilton convention hotel, both of which will open in 2026 and transform our skyline. The Signia will boast 800 connected hotel rooms, which puts us at number one in the U.S. for hotel rooms connected via climate-controlled skywalk, and the new 50,000 square-foot ballroom will be the largest in the state and one of the top ten largest in the U.S. More importantly, this project will transform our ability to keep our biggest and best conventions AND attract new four- and five-star event business, which will help us protect tens of thousands of hospitality jobs AND create new ones. It's going to be great for our city. https://bit.ly/3rOOSg2
