Today, we observe Juneteenth to celebrate the end of slavery throughout the United States, June 19, 1865. Considered the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Opal Lee is a retired teacher, counselor and activist who campaigned for decades to make the observance a federal holiday. In Sep. 2016, she led a symbolic four-month walk from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., to promote her cause. On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth became the latest federal holiday since the recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday in 1983. Juneteenth reminds us that the nation and its military services, including the U.S. Army, are forever committed to upholding and protecting the promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for every American citizen. #Juneteenth
