Energy Vault has partnered exclusively with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to develop the next generation of deployable gravity #energy storage (GES) structures. SOM, a global leader in architecture and engineering, will be the exclusive partner responsible for integrating Energy Vault’s #GES into tall buildings in urban environments. This partnership includes designing skyscrapers equipped with motorized systems to elevate massive blocks during periods of low energy demand. These blocks store energy, which is converted back into electricity during peak demand. SOM and Energy Vault’s superstructure towers, standing between 300 and 1,000 meters tall, will offer durable and cost-effective infrastructure for long-term, #renewable energy storage and delivery. “This partnership with Energy Vault is a commitment not only to accelerate the world’s transition away from fossil fuels but also to explore, together, how the architecture of renewable energy can enhance our shared natural landscapes and urban environments.” Adam Semel, a Managing Partner at SOM. Energy Vault is harnessing gravity to create #LDES solutions that promote #sustainability and accelerate #decarbonization targets worldwide. The #Time4Action is now to ensure #3xRenewables by 2030. A recent Stanford University study supports the use of firebricks for process heat, providing a detailed roadmap for countries to accelerate the global transition to #renewable energy at a low cost. Interest in firebricks is growing among investors and government leaders as a long duration energy storage solution. These heat-absorbing bricks store #thermal energy and release the high-temperature heat needed in various industries, allowing factories to operate even when there’s no direct supply of solar or wind energy. Professor Mark Jacobson along with his team at Stanford, developed computer models to compare scenarios for 2050 and beyond. These models assessed costs, land requirements, health impacts, and emissions. They determined that in countries responsible for 99.75% of global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, utilizing firebricks to supply 90% of industrial process #heat could cut capital costs by $1.27 trillion. The study also revealed that approximately 17% of global emissions come from burning fossil fuels for heat. Shifting to renewable sources like firebricks could significantly cut these emissions and lead to substantial improvements in public health by reducing air pollution. “What excites me is that the impact is very large, whereas many technologies that I’ve looked at have marginal impacts. Here, I can see a substantial benefit at low cost from multiple angles, from helping to reduce air pollution mortality to making it easier to transition the world to clean renewables,” said Jacobson. As the United Nations aims to achieve #netzero emissions by 2050, firebricks and other forms of #LDES are crucial in decarbonizing industries and ensuring a smooth transition to a #sustainable energy future. Member Form Energy has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to deploy an 85 MW/8500 MWh multi-day battery system in Maine, aimed at enhancing grid reliability and clean #energy in the region. Under the Power Up New England initiative, designed to improve grid interconnection between Massachusetts and Connecticut, the DOE has awarded Maine $147 million to build the battery system at a former paper mill in Lincoln. Form Energy will develop the 85-megawatt storage facility using iron-air technology, designed to enhance the #sustainability of New England’s electric grid while enabling continuous energy #discharge for over four days. “The project will ensure a more reliable, clean, and affordable grid in New England by reducing transmission congestion and making valuable wind energy resources available when and where they are needed,” said Mateo Jaramillo, CEO and Co-Founder of Form Energy. This grant is part of a broader $389 million investment in regional electric infrastructure, which will prepare Massachusetts and Connecticut for up to 4,800 megawatts of additional offshore wind energy. Anchor member Shell has signed a seven-year tolling agreement for a 330MWh #battery energy storage system (BESS) with global energy storage operator BW ESS and its partner, Penso Power Limited. The 100 MW/330 MWh Bramley site, currently under construction in Hampshire, UK, will feature a 2.5 MW Power Conversion System with string inverters and a 5 MWh battery designed to store excess energy from wind and solar farms in a compact space. Under the tolling agreement, BW ESS and Penso Power will receive a steady revenue stream over the agreement's term, ensuring financial stability as Shell deploys the #BESS across various ancillary services and wholesale markets. "This tolling agreement, which has been some time in the making, demonstrates the value of longer-duration, higher-performance battery systems. It secures long-term revenues for Bramley and supports the market's shift from short-term frequency response to load shifting," said BW ESS Chief Executive Erik Strømsø This agreement is the first long-term tolling arrangement for a single BESS asset in Great Britain and helps unlock opportunities for #energy storage and #decarbonization across Europe.
